Hi there! I have a question for anyone with sleep apena? How do you know if your setting is too high now after surgery or if you need CPAP at all? I keep waking up during the night messing with my CPAP, I was wondering if maybe now it is too high of a setting? But how do I know this?? ANyone have any ideas??? thanks! ~Nic~ 291/236/150

Hi Nicole, I believe that the only way to know for sure is to repeat the sleep study. My pulmonologist suggested that I have another sleep study 6 months to 1 year after the surgery to reassess whether the C-PAP is still needed and, if so, at what setting. I was also told that there is no danger in using a setting that technically might be too high.

My pulminologist told me to call him once I have lost 50-100 lbs so that I can have the sleep study redone. While I am down 66 lbs, I think I will wait it out till 100. I have also noticed that I "notice" the CPAP more lately but it does not really bother me too much. I have noticed that I can now sleep without the machine when that was not possible before.

My pulmonologist told me to try not using it for a couple of days and see if there is a difference in how I feel - if I am rested and not tired, than I probably don't need it anymore. mgm -52

Hi Nicole, I wasn't aware you could play with the settings. The rep from the company that supplied the machine set mine for me. Any way, we just took a trip to London & I did not lugg my machine with me. I slept okay but did notice I was yawning a lot more during the day. I there fore think I do still need it. I think I will wait until I am up to the 100 pound mark before going through the sleep study again. I am one of the few (I think) that actually like the machine. So many people I know of have been diagnosed with sleep apnea & don't use their machines. I love it. I hope this helps. Ellen (03/26/04) 315/272/160?

I felt the setting on my c-pap was too high after losing 25 lbs so I stopped using it and accessed whether I was really tired during the days, like before, and I felt fine without wearing it for a week and wasn't that tired. I called my pulmonary dr and she said to repeat the sleep study to determine if I don't need the machine. I go on the 25th, hopefully I be down at least another 10 lbs so I don't have to go thru another sleep study or have to wear it at a lower setting. Unfortunately its a rental and unless she writes a precription, my ins. company is stuck paying the bill! Good luck Wendy 275/226/150
