Topic: Lessons From My 5 Year Old Mother
I'm sitting here with hair dye on my head and thought, what beter way to spend 20 minutes than writing to my favorite online folks.

So my mother has her broken arm and is sleeping in her recliner because it's too painful to lay in bed.  The recliner breaks so on Mother's Day, off we go to the Lazy Boy store. She's always wanted a bonified Lazy Boy.  She picks out the chair she wants, we schedule delivery and off we go to the grocery store.  My mother loves me.  She tells me how grateful she is that I'm her daughter. I tell her the same.  She hands me her grocery list...

Cat Food
Entemen's Chocolate Donought Holes
Cat Litter
Cat Treats
Sweets
Chocolate Granola Bars
Toilet Paper

I look at the list.  I look at my morbidly obese, diabetic mother.  I look at the list again.  I remember that it's Mother's Day.  I decide not to make a fuss about of all the sugar on the list, but just to ask about adding protein.

"Mom, you're diabetic, don't you think we should add at least a little bit of protein to the list?"

What do you mean?"

"You know, cheese, eggs, meat, tuna."

She pouts.  MY MOTHER POUTS!!! and then she says, "I don't want to."  OK, fine.

We walk through the produce section and I pause in front of some tomatoes.  She loves tomatoes.  I look at Mom, catch her eye and look back at the tomatoes.  I don't say a word.  She snaps back, "I don't want any."  Then she says, "OK, OK!  I'll get some fruit." and she picks up a banana.  She shuffles along, looking down and as we pass the packaged meat she says, fine, I'll get some meat. Pick out some bacon."  BACON!?!? I don't say a word, I just pick up the leanest package of pork bacon I can find and put it in the cart.  She says, "Good, I thought you were going to get that turkey crap."

The ceral aisle was a nightmare.  I just decided to let it go.  She picked out some fruity, sugary kids cereal and granola bars that were covered in chocolate.

Now the pet food aisle was another story, only the best and most nutricious food for the cats.  I can't help myself.  "Mom, why do you buy the healthiest food you can get for the cats, but you don't do the same for yourself?"

And here it is.  In a nutshell, from my 73 year old mother who has the decision making abilities of a 5 year old lately.  "I love my cats."

Is that it?  Is it that simple?   I don't think that's the whole answer, but I do think that's a big, big part of it.  I have to remember to love myself enough to do what's best for me.  I can only pray that my mother will do the same.

On the way home, she declares that she's going to have her food delivered from now on.

I'm with you on this one.  Even though I'm up from my lowest :(  I'm still far lower than I've been since my early 20's.  I worry that with this economy, America will become more and more overweight.  It's cheaper to buy food from the bargain menu at almost all fast food places than it is to cook a healthy meal.  What did most of us live on in the lean (as in money, not weight) college years?  Kraft Mac and Cheese, Ramen Noodle Soup, and all the other high carb foods. That's when I started the weight gain.  Actually, it was when I was 13 and ran away from home, but again, I was eating cheap, high carb food because it was what I could afford.

I got to my lowest weight while I was on vacation in Spain. In fact, I lost another 7 pounds and it's because I was living like the Spaniards.  I walked all over the place and ate nothing but fresh seafood and fruits and veggies.  They don't serve breads and tortilla chips on the table in restaurants, they serve olives.  I thought that I was going to come home much heavier than I left because I was eating so much, but I actually lost because I was eating the right things.

I joined a food co-op and every week I get a large oval laundry basket full of fuits and veggies for 15.00.  I don't know if I've lost anything because I refuse to weigh myself, but I'm eating much, much better than I used to.

I'm with you guys on this one, I just haven't found a dietician that really understood the issues of weight loss patients or the morbidly obese.  I remember before surgery I had to see a dietician and do the 6 month diet for insurance.  She gave me a diabetic diet (I'm not diabetic, never have been) and for 6 months, tried to talk me out of surgery.  Now this woman was a good 40 or 50 pounds overweight and through the whole 6 months I went to her, never lost any weight that I could see.  I kept wondering if she was following the advice she as giving me and whether or not she could relate her own food issues with what was going on with her patients.

Marilyn, you keep doing what works for you.

Hugs,
Connie

I'm so glad that you've found a method that is working for you.  Good for you for never giving up.

I haven't tried the castor oil yet because The Man has been in DC for the Top Cops events.  There was a big police officer bruhaha in DC for the last week and he's been there for the whole ordeal.  Cops always take their significant others and I was the only SO of hisgroup that didn't go because I have to save my vacation time for surgery in he Fall.  He was a little lonely, but it just made him appreciate me that much more.

Keep up the good work and let us know how it's going.

Hugs,
Connie

You know that I've been praying all along and will continue to do so.  3% is really pretty low risk.  I deal in numbers and probabilities all day long.  Look at it this way, if you were given a 97% chance of winning the lottery, you'd sure go for it , wouldn't you?  It's almost 100% chance that things will be OK.  Hang in there, Kim.  If they are operating on Monday, you are almost at the end of this.  After Monday, Bill will be on a sure road to recovery and life will get back to normal.

Hugs,
Connie

I did mine! I really like that sight it is very interesting and has some great info.

Ideal weight range is 148 - 162.8 lbs. (67.3 - 74 kg.).
You are overweight by 18.2 lbs. (8 kg.).
while i'm not thrilled with being 18.2 pounds overweight its a heck of alot better than being 125 pounds overweight!
i felt great when i weighed 163 thats what i stayed at the longest. the 157 that i weighed was for less than a week i always wanted to be 145 but thats not gonna happen. i think thats too low.
my kids all tell me that since i've put on a few pounds they think i look better than when i was that skinny little thing.
now i blend in with all the other people of the world. hey i always wanted to blend!
And look at you your only 10 pounds overweight thats not even overweight! it says marginally! hey thats like maybe some water weight right? your doing great reenie!
My attitude is getting better about this whole thing with the weight.
one thing is that where i work now no one remembers me at the littlest weight. they all know me as me now. of course now and then i bump into some of the old peopl ei worked with but you know what? its in my head that they are looking and trying to figure out how much I've gained. and if that is running through their heads you kow what I say now? Screw em! I'm still smaller than they are! hahaha
take care keep in touch love ya!

O Paulie the wonderbird has a new saying he picked up from me...when i came downstairs ths moring instead of saying good morning lik ehe normally does this time he yells "OH MY GOD!" which is what i usually say when the cat is having her belimic episodes. why does she bother to eat if she is going to get the hairball attack on my carpet? i think she's doing it on perpose I buy her good cat food probalby nbetter than what i'm eating to correct this problem. does it work? no i should get some road kill that would be cheaper and she is gonna throw it up anyways.
sorry when into my tangent again...

I understand just what your saying marilyn it makes my blood boil! I still can not understand why the dietician at my surgeons office after knowing that I had abused laxatives to try to lose weight and was going through terrible episodes having to eat every 20 to 30 minutes or goign  into them would give me a strick diet and tell me i needed to eat no more than 3 hours between meals. when i told her again what was happening she basicvally told me it was all in my head!!!
Then told me in a sarcastic voice " you wnat to lose weight don't you"
lets back up a minute or lets back up 5 years ago little miss size 0 missy! I had the friggin surgery 5 years ago lady to lose weight that I could not do on my own. duhhhhhh YES  you idiot I do want to lose weight I want to stop gaining the weight that I can not keep off but I also on the other hand do not want to pass out get dizzy feel numb and have pains in my feet lets not forget the coldness in those same feet hands and lets!
In my head give me a break. the more i think about it the more angry I get about that. let me tell you the next time i go for a visit i will NOT be seeing that dietician and I will be giving my surgeon a piece of my mind. I'm sure he's heard it all before but he'll hear it again and from me.
You should have seen my face when I went to the homeopathic naturalist doctor when i told her. i thought i was being like an anerexic but what i was was bulimec (please forgive the spelling) The new doctor told me that when I said I was afraid that I would be come anerexic she said no you are bulimec. Because I was using extreme excersize and laxatives and not eating to try to lose weight.
I thought other than the laxatives that i wasn't being drastic with the other stuff but combined with it all yeah i was. ok live and learn right?
now i have to fight with myself daily to do what is right and if i have a problem figuring that out i just read the info she gave me along wiht my notes. plus i have to document what i eat and what excersize i do.
i'm doing good. i'm sorry i got all wound up again on my tangent about those stupid doctors!
sometimes its a waste of our money to go to them!

oh yeah... and yep... taking my multivitamins. I had an issue with my b12 and iron levels.. I am on a prescription b12 nose spray. Yep in the nose!!! it's weird!  and also chewable multi-vitamins and then extra iron. Been taking them faithfully. I have to do blood tests again to see if my levels are better but haven't had the time yet. I'll probably go the end of the month to see how it all pans out. The good thing is that our protein drinks normally contain alot of vitamins too! :)
