"an addiction you love to talk about but not do anything about"  I have to say that is unfair don’t you think? She went from 400 to 158 I kinda think she's had an amazingly successful battle with her addictions. It will always be a struggle for mostly all of us probably for the rest of our lives. Even with a therapist.
Attitude…you know…there is no white or black right or wrong here. Everyone is different! I’m a huge example when it comes to attitude. I have a “never give up" and “keep positive" attitude about loosing weight yet I STILL haven’t gone under 200. It’s physical as well. Extremely when it comes to sugar. Determination is also a huge factor. Willpower is a huge factor… there are so many Quote “Factors" we can’t argue that its only attitude or only willpower or addiction or determination… its everything all blended into one lovely battle. True?
Sometimes it comes down to going cold turkey when your an addict at times and getting it out of your system...happy or not, attitude be darned…you just have to quit. Period. Get it physically out of your system.  Sometimes you don’t even have time to think about attitude when that happens. It’s just DONE. believe me, been there and been there. OR (with help such as methadone) in my case.... Sugar free candies!!!  That’s when the determination and attitude start creeping into play. Its all relative.
Look...we're all different. Some people eat carbs….if I do I go crazy. I'm getting ready to talk to my doc about celiac disease because it keeps popping up. But, because its not included in the diet doesn’t mean that its not a reasonable diet. I’m just meaning that what may look like very little and unappealing to one person (as long as it is healthy) may be perfect for another.

For example my diet may and actually has resembled Maureen’s with the protein for breakfast and lunch…most are chock full of vitamins and such while it looks very minimal, protein drinks contain alot of calories based on the ones that you buy... I just had labs done and I eat ALOT of good protein and my protein levels are low because (per the doctor) of my weight loss surgery. (I stopped drinking them awhile ago) Now, I have to drink them again. I'm trying to loose weight so I have to reduce my eating. Sensible dinner protein and veggies and such... looks very minimal...but enough calories to loose and remain healthy. I lost some weight...been sick too so that added to it...but the doc said that what I'm eating is ok.  But to list it and look at it...yeah some may be like...whoa... can't do it...looks too little... but doesn't mean it’s unreasonable or unhealthy. Maybe that is where the misunderstanding is comming into play?
At any rate…no one is allowed to leave and we are all here to support each other… Maureen you are doing awesome. You’re still my hero. We’ll always be battling sugar addiction. It’s gonna be with us forever unfortunately. Hang in there!  If it’s working for you stick with it!  Besides…I’m eyeballing what you’re eating because I’m pretty much doing exactly the same thing. Oh lost 8 pounds by the way!!! Yay!! Finally! Whew!

Why wouldn't I want to read this, Kim (what you say in your opening sentence)? I can't think of anyone I know-myself included-who doesn't believe that a positive attitude is important to have and to share, no matter what. What I am debating here is that addiction is something that can be cured with a positive attitude; addiction is a disease, it's a condition that is manipulated by the way our brain chemistry is altered by a given substance. I try very hard to stay positive in my life; I have come to this Board in times of great sadness many times because of what I was dealing with at the time. I thought it was ok for me to do that, that this Board was a place of support and where I could reach out and get some valuable advice. And terrific recipes on Wednesdays!    I'm grateful for that and for being able to express my views even when they ruffle a few feathers - although I never intend to hurt anyone - ever. As for this thread, I was merely trying to get at a better understanding of the concept of "attitude" as it relates to addiction. Not my drama!  Positively yours, Maureen

I'll go back to Borders where I found it and write down the name of the book and the author and get it to you. Might be next weekend - we're expecting another round of snow which might have me hibernating this weekend! Maureen

The reason for my distress with you is that you put words in my mouth.  I  never called you weak in any way, yet that was the response I got.  No one is asking you to go anywhere.  All I am saying is that if you have an addiction problem, then you need to go that route.  It is a matter of attitude.  If you have an addiction to a particular food, you need to find ways to over come that addiction.  We can talk about food choices and exercise until the cows come home.  But addiction is an entirely different issue.  The substance you are addicted is sugar.  No one needs candy to live.  If candy makes you crazy then perhaps you have to cold turkey it...or not.  I honestly don't know.  I am not a trained counselor or therapist.  But you should find one and make it a priority if that is what is keeping you from your goals.  And as much as you don't want to believe it...attitude is everything.  We have addicts in here with bad attitudes, and guess what?  They will get out of here and continue to use.  We also have addicts who are determined not to use again....and they are the ones with promise.  I'm sorry you don't agree with what I am saying but I guess that is the beauty of living in America...we all have our opinion.

Huh, this is interesting. I'm not attacking anyone, I'm countering your assertion about this being merely an issue of "attitude". And I don't recall anyone posting to this board that they thought I was attacking them because they disagreed with me. I've been here a long time, Joan, and I'm not going anywhere unless I am asked to leave because I am of no use to anyone here. I meant it when I said you are a model of success post-WLS and I am truly happy for you. Maureen
