Topic: RE: am i taking in to many calories
Tema,
I'm no specialist, but I like to think about it this way-- How does your current calorie intake compare to your pre-surgery intake? If you were like me, you were possibly consuming well over 600 calories in a single meal, much less an entire day. How can you help but lose weight on a 600 calorie diet?
Second, I suggest you you go to a calorie calculator like the one on the following website:
http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm
It has various settings for age, height, sex, weight, and activity level. For me, I have to eat like 2700 calories to maintain my weight. You're welcome to plug the figures in for yourself. You'll most likely find that you can't help but lose weight in the long run on a 600 calorie diet.
If you had a malabsorptive surgery, you may be consuming 600 calories, and your body may only absorb a fraction of those calories.

Glad to hear you are doing so well. If it's any condolence, I had about a week where I was almost at a stand still as far as weight loss goes. That was truly a bummer, as I had been used to losing a few pounds a day. For me, the most exciting part of losing the weight has been watching my BMI go down. If I were to be submitted to the insurance company today for surgery, they would decline me as my BMI is now down to 36.0!!! I know it may sound strange, but I decided last week that it's OK with me if my weight loss were to slow down.
Before you know it, you will be over this hump! By the way you act like 23 pounds isn't totally awesome!! I'd say you're on track for the 40 pounds in the first months!
As for the teaching thing, that is awesome news. I think it goes to show that sometimes you take control of one part of your life, and others start to fall in line. As for chasing kids around, I think you've discovered the secret to my success. We have 4 little ones under the age of 8.
I know what it's like to want to be done with a particular type of job. I was working as a bill collector for several years, and I was so glad when I was finally able to move on....

Thanks for the post!!
This is definately a journey we are doing together. I have also found it to be a chance to renew my religious focus, which has helped me with the transition to a non-food centered life. With every day that passes we thank God for all he has done for us, including making our surgeries a reality.

Thanks for the support! This Mar 07 board is the BEST. I'm trying to focus on protein intake to minimize muscle loss as much as possible. Just started trying to get some exercise this week. It's been a struggle, but it's alot easier than when I was 50 pounds heavier.

As too have been surprised how quickly the weight has come off. 15 pounds of my weight was lost in the 2 week pre-surgery diet. My pant waist size has gone from 50 to 46. My shirt size has gone from 3XL to 2XL.

I'm sure our 4 kids under the age of 8 are keeping me on my toes. The 49 pounds includes 15 pounds on my 2 week pre-surgery diet. Forgive me for including this, as I feel it is part of my surgery experience.
I had almost a whole week where I lost almost nothing. Then about a week ago I started to lose again. As for exercise, I just started to get some exercise going yesterday, as having lost the 50 pounds has increased my confidence.
Honestly, I too am so surprised I've lost this much weight that I had to post it to our discussion board. I like to think that my somewhat muscular build has increased my weight loss.

Rita,
sounds like you are doing an awesome job! I have to agree that soft foods completely slow things down. I have only lost about 11 pounds and i will be two weeks on Thursday. Course I came home 6 pounds heavier from all the saline stuff. But at my one week follow up, doc put me on soft foods. I just really didn't want to do it, but I would be stir crazy with all liquids. I can only dream of hitting 21 pounds in a month if things don't kick in.
Sounds like you are getting exercise especially having a 5 year old! I wish you the best and I hope you are proud of what you've done so far.
Blessings

Hi Rita,
Congrats on all of your successes - the weight loss, the acceptance to the teaching program, etc. That is all super! I am really happy for you!
I too am stuck at the 20-22 lb. loss mark and I will be 3 weeks post op tomorrow. My weightloss also stopped when I started soft foods. Everyone here has reassured me that it will pick up again soon. They also reminded me to look at the big picture - When is the last time you lost 21-23 pounds on any diet in a month even? So even if you don't lose another pound this month, you will be ahead of where you have been in the past. It's very hard to keep all of this in mind - especailly if you are as impatient as I am - and when you need reassurance that this surgery is going to work - that you won't fail at yet another weight loss attempt (at least, that's how it is for me). We can do this though - just stay off the scale as much as possible!!!!
You're doing great! So cut yourself some slac****ep doing what youare doing - following doctor's orders, and it will pay off for you in the long run!
Good Luck,
Robin
