Topic: RE: A little help?
Hi Steph - I think it depends on you, your PCP, your surgeon, and your insurance company. You: This is the MOST important - Because you are in control of the steps that need to be taken. It sounds like you know about the steps and you're on your way. If you know the surgeon, look on their website for the steps. You do not have to wait for them to get the referrals for the tests, your PCP can do it also. Your PCP: Your PCP needs to be on board (sounds like someone is because you're on your way) to get the referrals. If you know what your surgeon needs from their website, tell your PCP; they will give your the referrals (blood work, urine test, ultrasound, EKG, Chest X-Ray, etc.). My PCP was surprised because most people let the surgeon's office do all the work for them. Take charge of yourself and it will be much faster. Your Surgeon: You may know some people who have used the surgeon you are looking at. I encourage you to search this site for more individuals, that was a HUGE help for me. That helped me to know the approximate time-line. He/she may have a requirement of 6 months dieting, although I don't think most do that any longer. You just need to show everything you've attempted. I put mine all on an Excel Spreadsheet. Your Insurance: Now, I hope you've already read up and made sure your insurance will cover this type of surgery. You can also look up on this site others with the same carrier AND surgeon to see the timeline. If you know they will cover with XYZ, then DON'T submit it to them until you have done XYZ... I've always WANTED WLS, but never thought I could actually do it until I met an old friend who had the surgery. I talked to her for the first time about WLS on February 4th. She told me the different steps. I had my surgery last Tuesday, March 27th. I took charge of my own care and got it done! I had a FANTASTIC surgeon and I'm feeling wonderful now too! Please keep us posted and Good Luck! Jill

Topic: RE: Is anyone still feeling pain
Hi Rita - I'm sorry you're still having pain. I agree with Tema, the more you walk, the less pain you will feel. Do you think it could be gas? Walking will help that too, but GasX may help as well. I took a couple the first two days home from the hospital and it helped. Don't forget, everyone heals differently. Have you had any previous surgeries which will help you to determine your healing time? I went off of my two C-Sections and Tubal, they were right on for me. If it unusual for you to take so long to recover, I think you should tell your doc that. I'm assuming that you don't have your drain any longer (if you do, that's probably it). The word that you use concerns me, "severe pain". I think if you pinpoint exactly where it is, you should talk to the doc and see what he/she says. If you're not running a fever, I think you just may need to move more... Good Luck and Keep us posted! Jill

Topic: RE: Surgery on Tuesday, home yesterday - I feel good!
It's pretty new that they are sending people home on the 2nd day. It was actually the evening of the 2nd day. They don't send everyone home at the same time. Those who are doing well, walking, etc. go home. Those who have a lot of pain, nausea, not walking, don't go home. Once I ate the broth, and everything was fine, I knew I was comfortable going home. (Yes, I had the blue dye, but the broth felt like "food".) I'm still feeling excellent. I have had no pain at all since I've been home, no pain meds, nothing. I was sore until today. Today I feel like myself, completely and totally like myself. However, it is a great excuse not to do all the housework. Honestly, my surgeon has been fantastic. He is the Medical Director of the Baratric Unit of this hospital - all they deal with are those coming out of WLS. I received FANTASTIC care! I AM SOOOO happy that I did this! Tomorrow, I go back to the doc's office and then I'll get to eat pureed food! YIPPEE!! Oh, and I've lost 13 pounds!

Hi Robin, Congrats on the 20 pounds. My dr told me that surgery is a trauma to your body and you lose stuff you shouldn't in the first week or so, muscle, body proteins, etc. He said that I should expect not to lose or only a pound or two for a couple weeks so that the body can regain the things it needs. I have lost 19 so far, so we will see. Good luck, Wanda

Hi Sherry, Thanks for the advice and support. My surgeon said that my caloric intake should be about 600 calories, and I am keeping mine between 500 and 600 calories per day. Like I said, I am doing everything right. I guess I just lost a lot of water weight really fast and so I was expecting to keep losing at a steady rate. When I look at the graphs of my caloric intake vs. my calories burned on fitday.com, it looks like I should have burned enough additional calories to have lost at least 2-3 more pounds. Maybe it's because I have been a little constipated since starting on the soft food where with the liquids I was going constantly. I am going to stick with the program, and hopefully I will be posting soon that I dropped a number of pounds. Thanks again! Robin

I still have some pain on my left side where most of my incisions are, and I'm also 12 days out. It is normal. Your body is still healing and adjusting to the changes. I hear it takes about 1.5-2 weeks to recover from the surgery, so just give yourself a little more time. Sherry

You just need to give your body time and make sure your calorie intake is low enough to cause a weight change. Are you tracking all of your intake? I know that we are only allowed 300 calories per day during the soft food stage of my post-op program. You did not mention your intake, but you have to burn 3500 more calories than you consume in order to lose 1 pound. In addition, consider that you might also be overdoing it with the exercise if you are building muscle weight with your walking instead of just doing 30 minutes a day to burn calories. I guess it depends on how much you did prior to your surgery and whether a mile per day of walking is something that you have done for awhile or is something new that is building muscle weight instead of just burning fat. You'll have to look into that. I had surgery the day before you, and my weight loss has been slow since about 4-5 days after my surgery. I have only lost half as much as you, but I know that I have to stick with it and it will melt off in time. This slow loss in the beginning sometimes happens with people as the body fights the change and tries to hold onto the fat instead of letting it go. At least I believe that is what is happening with me as that has happened to others I know as well. 20lbs is a lot in a short period of time, and most people only lose 20-30 lbs per month in the first 3-4 months after surgery. You still have 2.5 weeks until your first month is up, and being down 20 lbs already is fantastic. I know it's frustrating, but it will take time and you just have to stick with the program and be patient with the changes. Keep your chin up!! Sherry
