Your are right, my doctor doesn't allow us to eat pototoes or any starchy foods. I know all doctors are different but I would avoid the starch. Maureen

HI! I have a question concerning the potatoes. I know potatoes will go down well since they are so smooth; but why would we be able to eat such a starchy carb? Seems we should be avoiding potatoes and things like that for quite a while. Maybe I am misled but I would just be way too scared to eat carbs like that. I would welcome any insight on the matter. My surgery is in a week and I wanna know everything.. Peace,

Topic: RE: Vitamins...protein..etc?
Hi. The nutritionist that I met with pre-op recommended a chewable vitamin made specifically for bariatrtic patients - Resource Optisource. You can buy it at Walgreens. 1 bottle costs about $28, but it's a month's supply. You have to take 4 a day, but they aren't too bad. If you are like me and took St. Joseph's baby aspirin as a kid, that's what the taste reminds me of. I wasn't advised to worry about any additional vitamins at this point. Wendy

WEEKS before surgery, or as soon as you can: Get off of the caffeine, and stop using straws. Start forcing at least 64 ounces of water every day. Start getting in the habits of: eating your protein first (and THEN the fries, lol) Chew your food really well. Don't drink during meals, I started off by ordering something to drink, but not taking a drin****il after my last bite of food. Get 30 minutes worked into your schedule EVERYDAY for you to excercise Order Med Alert Jewlery ("Gastric Bypass. No blind NG tube. No NSAIDS. No sugar") Make sure everything in your house works and isn't overdue for service or batteries...the car, the TV remote, the appliances. You will not want the stress of broken things when you get home from the hospital. Order your vitamins (you need sublingual B12, and a B1 isn't a bad idea either. Remember you won't be able to swallow pills for at least a month) Get the heavy housework done. It is so much more pleasant to come home to a clean house, and you won't be tempted to push yourself if the clutter and the dirt aren't there to nag at you. Make sure you have some soft, comfortable, LOOSE clothes. Your belly will be swollen for 2 weeks or so, maybe as much as a size bigger. You'll need something to wear home from the hospital and something to wear to your first post-op appointment. Load in the groceries if you have a family. You won't be able to eat most of it, but you won't be able to drive to "run to the store" for them either. Buy a strainer, too. Good luck, and try not to worry too much.

Hi Danielle, Congratulations on your 3 week mark. Good pureed foods or foods for this stage are anything you can get to the consistancy of cottage cheese or applesauce. Cottage Cheese egg salad scrambled eggs chicken salad- I use the canned chic, ff mayo, and dill pickels (YUMMY)(I do puree this) you can also make the above with turkey or tuna Wendy's chili (or make your own chili)- I was surprised that this worked re-fried beans I would wait on the peanut butter for a few more weeks (it tends to gum up the pouch) You will have to experiment on some of the meats - I can handle red meat, fish and broiled shrimp, but none of the white meats unless it is not reconizable.(SP)Pureed to death. There is a lot that you can do in this phase, but remember to eat slow and rest in between bites. I can usually tell with in the 1st 2 bites if it is going to work. Good luck!!

Topic: Is your surgery date soon?
I have 3 or 4 pairs of pants made from t-shirt knit fabric in a size 26. They were really soft and comfortable to wear on the way home from the hospital and during the few days after surgery before everything healed up well enough to get back into my jeans. They are way too big for me now. If anyone is interested, please email me your address (click on my name and then click "send message" in the upper left corner) and I will send them to you. If you are superstitious at all, I have had no complications and haven't had any nausea/vomiting/food problems post op (so far. Knock on wood). Maybe these pants are a good luck charm, too!!!

Designer Whey ($8 from Trader Joe's, or order on line) is the only protein I have been able to find that doesn't have that vomit smell and taste that all of the other wehy protein seems to have. They are also selling protein "shots" on some of the websites. 3 swallows and you have 25 grams of protein down. As for the expense.....run a total of all of the money you spent on drive through and junk food last month. I betcha a month of protein won't cost what we spent in a week as pre-ops!!!

Danielle, KFC mashed potatoes and gravy are good. So is pintos and cheese from taco bell. I am two weeks post op and I am able to eat tuna fish, just chew it well, I didn't use the blender. I also love cod fish and it goes down really well. scrambled eggs are good, just chew well. the inside of baked potatoes with a little bit of light sour cream works too. I am also eating cottage cheese without pureeing it. good luck Lisa
