Topic: RE: Iron Supplements???
Hi Robin
I have to agree with Kat. I've been instructed to take an Iron supplment in the dose of 36mg/day (for menstruating women, men and non-menstruating women 18mg/day). Stores like Walgreens, CVS, GNC, Target, Sprouts, Hi-Health, and Vitamin World should all carry what you need.
I have been told that liquid Iron tastes incredibly disgusting, so you may wind up splitting or crushing a pill. The ones I bought at GNC were small enough for me to split in half and swallow.
Good luck!
Nicole

Topic: RE: Surgery on 3/13 and feeling AWFUL
I'm feeling a little better this afternoon. But I noticed my "symptoms" are starting up again - my mouth produces lots of bile, my throat feels closed off and my back starts to hurt. I tend to throw up some time after that. I just took another dose of my Reglan (for naseua and vomiting) to see if that will stop the inevitable.

I would check again on that dose, 325mg is what we give in aspirin dose (or 81 mg)... Iron tablets are around 30 mg each... I don't think he meant to take 10 tabs...
A dose that high might require IV infusion... The side effects of a dose that high would be staggering... many people have severe nausea from just a 60 mg dose... and constipation that can lead to intestinal blockage from a daily dosing of 60 mgs...
I really would check to make sure he meant 325 and not 32.5? (or 30ish)... if he is certain that is what he meant, then be sure to use a fiber supplement and ask the nutritionist where to buy the product.

Hang in there
The first few days home were good for me, but the day 4-9 I hit a bad 'what did I do?' spot where I got very depressed and was very emotionally struck by not being allowed anything more than clear liquids.... I believe healing wise it was good, but I did not enjoy the grieving for the meals I could not have.
So watch yourself, don't be alone, have lots of support for when that phase strikes... the good news is it's only a little while, then you're stronger and happier.

My doc had me on clear liquids *only* for a week postop (and 2 weeks preop too). My surgeon actually forbid the protein drinks for the first week, so that your tummy doesn't get nauseated
I suspect if you tried that it might help. It can't hurt.
As for the vomiting, are you on some kind of stomach acid reducer? I'm on Prevacid Solutabs. Not vomiting blood I hope?
Ok, the taste in your mouth is inevitiable, fewer meals mean less "brushing" of the teeth with solids. It's also probably related to the vomiting, so if you can get that under control it might help (ie need to brush frequently to get rid of it).
The urine is going to smell stronger for a while, till you get your fluids back up, that's because you are probably in early dehydration... make sure you get your water, and clears and don't stress over protein yet...
Keep in touch.... OH and the fever could also be a sign of dehydration. I would stick to clears, get your water in, and see how you feel in the morning... then if not better, make a Dr's appointment.

Hey - I had my surgery on 3/13 and nothing is going the way I expected. I have thrown up about 7 times and have been back to the hospital twice. My last vomiting episode left a horrible taste in my mouth and my urine has the same weird smell. I also ran a fever last night (99.6 to 101.6 under the armpit). My doctor is out of town and his on call person said maybe this is just normal for me. (Well, not the fever - he does not know about that.) I will call my doc when he gets back on Monday and see what the deal is. I have not been able to eat my protein shakes/vitamins. I tried on Friday, and then put myself back on clear liquids until I can talk to my doctor. UGh. This is not what I expected.

Hello!
Well, my surgeon couldn't have been more pleased with how my surgery went. He said my pre-op diet really shrank my liver which is helpful during surgery. He also said that it showed that I was committed to making life long changes to my eating habits. I had a really weird experience with the anesthesia... I can remember everything up to the point I passed out.. I also felt like I couldn't breathe right before I conked out which was kind of scary but I thought, "Hey, I'm in the hospital - they know what they are doing.." It took me 2 hours to wake up from anesthesia and I was pretty groggy the rest of the day and in to the night... The pain wasn't bad at all - just try to stay on top of it and you will do fine...I couldn't sleep with the pressure cuffs on my legs and my IV machine clicking all night long. My second night I was able to sleep... I am taking fluids well, but I do feel hungry... I'm sure it doesn't help that I keep watching the Food network... I should stop that... I am almost under 300 lbs. now and started at 320. My husband says that he can already tell a difference in my face and in the size of my belly.
I can't wait to see how things will progress over the next few weeks...
Topic: Iron Supplements???
My Surgeon says I need to take an iron supplement in the amount of 325mg daily in the crushed or liquid form. I cannot find a supplement that will give me that amount. Does anyone have any suggestions for an iron supplement that meets these requirements?
Thanks,
Robin

Glad to know I could help Gwen
I've been researching this stuff (while trying to get approval) for 4 years almost. So I've heard of the phases and the feelings associated with it... it's just not so simple sometimes to step back and say "oh, that's the part they were talking about"...
I had to get past that "grieving for never eating again" phase and the "what did I do?" phase to see that I DO get past it to the "yaaay Look at me, I can do it!" part
And of course I'm expecting stuff like that to happen again.... but I made it through the first one... and please, watch yourself, don't be alone, and most of all DON"T STOP DRINKING... I can see it's sooo easy for that depression to trigger an "I give up" attitude, that could be deadly... so you hang in there, we are all here for you and it WILL GO AWAY SOON
:big big hugs:
