Topic: RE: Surgery Tuesday - On Sugar Free Liquids Now
Thank you Kat! I needed that motivation and inspiration! I hope it does go that well for me. I am just struggling to get through the day today with the liquid diet. I thought 3 days was a long time, so I don't know how you did two weeks. WOW!!! I had a tough time this afternoon but had some hot and sour soup broth for dinner and feel better now. I wish I could have the rest of the chinesse we got, but I was good. My husband does have to wor****il mid-afternoon Sunday, so it will be just me and the kids. I hope they don't drive me nuts! I got some easy meals to make them so i don't have to labor over any food prep during thwe stages when I can't eat. Anyway, thanks again and keep in touch! Sherry

I had lap band on 3/14. I made corned beef cabbage carrots and potatoes for my family. As today is St Pattys day. I took a small amount of each and about 6 tablespoons of the liquid that it cooked in and pureed it. I had to chop the meat up finely first. It was like a thin baby food consistency. It tasted divine. I only ate about 1/8 cup. Other than that I drink a lot of water a little at a time and in little sips. Also, I drink shakes, and boulloin and tea. So far so good. The only problem I find is TV commercials. I didnt realize until after surgery that 85% of commercials are about FOOD.

Hang on Chris! You'll make it... it's a slow and painful journey for many of us, but it's wonderful at the other side of the OR.

Topic: RE: Dave's home at last!
Dave, my first 36ish hours was like that, only awake long enough to groan for nausea meds. My doc used a self administered pain pump (PCA pump) so I didn't have to call for that... about 36 hrs in my nausea disappeared and I was discharged when tolerating water (next am) and SF clears. I'm sorry it was so rough for you... I can tell you the first 2 days home were great, lots of energy, picked up my spirits well... then day 4-9 were harder (mostly head hunger issues and depression over WANTING food that my body could not hold or digest.... day 11 today and doing very well, now that I'm eating some thicker stuff. I can't tell you what a celebration it is to know I'm down by 32 lbs!!! (counting 2 weeks preop liquid diet too). Chin up, you will feel better soon And you'll have some measurable victory on the scales too

I'm 11 days out now from RNY and I wish you healing as well as I have! I was begging to get up and walk the same day of my surgery (nurses were content to let me just sit in bed)... but I know that's not the best for lungs soooo I got up and walked to the scales ..... WARNING - you will gain fluid during surgery and gain as much as 10 lbs! DON"T get discouraged, it's normal. Anyway, I was dischargd 48 hrs after my RNY started. I went shopping in the mall the same day I'm about 3 days ahead of my nutritionists "ideal schedule" for tolerating meals, never once threw up.... and only once got dumping because *I* was an idiot. Got the 'low blood sugar, gonna fall asleep' type. Day 6, I wanted to chew... I decided on crackers, supposed to be on full liquids but I convinced myself that in water they become mush so I could do it.... HOWEVER I did NOT stop to think that saltines were a better choice than "Cheez It" crackers.... I ate only 5 crackers, but the high volume of fat in them made me dump... SOOO yaaaay I know I can dump now... and I won't do it again Anyway, no vomiting (not once)... pain was well controlled with the liquid vicodin until I stopped needing it around day 8 (yah I'm a wuss). Now I don't use anything for pain, can tolerate 15 minutes a day of sustained walking (despite my knees and back)... and I'm ready to celebrate... the best news of all?? I was 345 lbs before my preop liquid diet (2 weeks) and as of today I'm 313lbs!! Need to update my tickerfactory

My nutritionist specifically told me not to replace meals with protein drinks. Those drinks CAN count in my water total for the day, but do not replace meals. RNY'ers require about 60 gr protein per day at this stage (I'm 11 days out). You won't get that by skipping meals. Eventually RNY patients need to get to 60 oz water a day and 100 grams protein a day. So sip the drinks for your water, not for your meals G'luck!

Hang on Michelle, the first few days seemed sooo easy.... (I'm 11 days out today). Then I hit this wall on day 4... that left me very down and struggling with my desire to eat versus my new pouchie feeling full with jus****er. Don't let it get to you, have lots of support ready for your call/cry... and hang on tight... today is day 11 and it IS getting better... but wow that week (from day 4-9) was very very difficult for me. Few choices, and not one that I wanted... watching others eat... wow... very big ticket depression came on... but OH and my hubby helped me through and now... day 11, I'm much more confident and much happier with the new me... not to mention I lost another 4 lbs since day 9 Just stick to the water and hang in there.

My advice isn't going to help much because of my RNY but I'll give it.... I was to do Sugar Free (SF) Clear liquids for 1 week, then full liquids for 1 week, then start puree when I do my 2 week checkup. I can drink about 2 oz every 30 minutes (per hospital instructions). NOW, that being said... I do about 2 oz an hour (I forget to drink every 30 mins) and I got fed up with clear liquids at day 5, so I started full liquids then (soups, etc), and fed up with full liquids at day 9, so I started Blue Bunny Lite 85 yogurt (made with splenda and fat free)... I've tolerated that well, and last night I got GUTSY and had 3 bites of steamed fish, with no problems. BUT like I said, I'm an RNY patient so I'm a bit different. I agree with the others, call the MD's office and insist on a written outline from the dietician he works with.

I am scheduled to have my Lap RNY in April and I am afraid of the pain. I was told it's very painful from a friend that had it done. I just want to prepare myself so I will know what to expect. Can you guys help me know what to expect. I will be talking to the doctor the day before too.

Well HI Amanda! Congratulations on your surgery date. What is a VSG? Is it what we call gastric bypass or the banding? I've been online today purchasing measuring cups, measuring spoons, and a brand new but small blender that is supposed to be excellent at pureeing (sp?) foods. Have you started to prepare? I feel like there's so much to do! I wish you all the best both pre and post up. From the eastern seaboard of the US, Sadie
