60 is a MINIMUM requirement... (anything less for more than a few weeks, and you will likely end up in hospital from malnutrition, getting a feeding tube or TPN). After you've had RNY you stop absorbing as well so your protein intake will progress. The general consensus seems to be around 100 grams protein and 100 oz water per day after about 3 months postop.... personally I can't make that goal, but that's the goal...

Topic: RE: 3 or 5 meals per day?
Sadly the grazing thing is worse among those who don't use measured snacks (say 1 oz beef jerky or 1 oz cheese) because they do develop a hand in mouth habit... I agree, for those patients, 6 meals creates a problem... but for those whose "meal" is an ounce of cheese and an ounce of jerky... or a slice of deli turkey... etc... that's a different thing... they may need the calories and protein involved in more frequent meals. I know when I started, 1 cheese stick was a whole meal... to do just that 3 times a day, would be a nutritional injustice to myself (not even 500 cal/day)... I don't think one can generalize in either regard, since there are lots of "3 meal/day" folks who don't eat properly, overeat, pick wrong foods, etc... and still also never hit goal or get close. It's all about the individual and their compliance.

Anti grazing is a good thing... BUT for new postops (under 12 weeks) it's oiften too difficult to get the needed amounts in with only 3 meals... I generally AIM to have breakfast at 8, morning snack at 11, lunch at 2, dinner at 6. But truth is, I'm not too hungry and don't eat breakfast or morning snack (most days) then I do eat around 2 and then again at 6 and I'm done. I still manage 60ish grams of protein and 80 oz water

Good stuff-- I've gotta try to think of more ways to try to get my kids enjoying more physical activities with me. I've been contemplating taking morning bike rides, and inviting them to come along. I've been feeling more adventurous lately too!! That's part of the reason why I started this thread! --Dave

I can relate to the improvements on the elliptical machine. A few months before my surgery I bought a more expensive elliptical machine only to find that I could only make it through about about 5 minutes before almost dying. I can now do over 40 minutes, and could probably do longer if I tried. I've got to catch your inspiration to get on a morning routine. I think it'd help jump start my day. --Dave

Hey Guys, I have started working out, and I enjoy being able to use the elliptical machine for 40 minutes. Five years ago I could only do three to five minutes, and I was spent. While I'm working out on the machine I'm smiling to myself thinking how wonderful it is to have the strength, and energy to workout. I love my GBP surgery, and what it is allowing me to do. I going walking in the morning, and going to try walking four miles. Lesley

So far I am still on bedrest due to open incicison and infection of lower spine but, I have still lost 67 pounds and can bend over and reach the floor without having to rest afterwords. I can reach my upper cupboards cause part of my stomach is gone. I know this isn't what you meant but I can not wait to get out and about and see what great things I can do now that I couldn't before. This is a great start though! My DH brought up a tote with older clothes that I had last week and I have traded my way baggy 3x's for baggy 2x's the 1x's are a bit snug yet. My 3x's are going to my nephews girlfriend who wants WLS but has no insurance, job or any other way to pay. Carolyn

Jodell and I went to a Beach Boys concert last night. It was fun, and I was pleasantly surprised that my body wasn't uncomfortably squished up against some stranger. From our highest weights, Jodell and I have lost a combined 145 pounds. That makes fitting into 2 chairs so much easier. It's like not having to fit a 3rd person in 2 chairs. Instead of being uncomfortable, we were able to snuggle and just enjoy each other's company. What a change!! In going to the concert, we both were able to wear some clothes in our new sizes. I am comfortably enjoying an XL t-shirt from a snug 3XL or possibly a 4XL 3 months ago. I also wore some 40" waist shorts, down from a 52" just 3 months ago. Jodell dropped another shirt and pant size. I was able to convince her to donate some of her too baggy clothes to her sister. What new activities are you enjoying? --Dave
