Topic: Pre-op was yesterday!!
Good morning!
I had my pre-op yesterday and met with the WLS dietician and nurse. Boy it was a long day. I had to meet with the insurance rep. at the surgeons office and pay my deposit, then I went to the hospital to meet with the Anesthesiologist, have my lab work, my EKG, and my chest x-ray done. The only bad part was when they drew the blood for the blood gases. I've never had blood drawn from an artery. The lady who stuck me the first time missed the artery and kept moving the needle around trying to hit it. Man that hurt like heck. She never could get the needle in the artery, so she called another lady down and she finally got it. I hope I never have to have blood gases checked again. That was definately the most painful part. Then I met with the nurse and she went over what to expect the day of surgery and during the hospital stay and she also discussed medications. Then the dietician came in and went over the pre-op diet, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd day after surgery diets, and then the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd week diets. She also discussed the importance of putting ourselves on a schedule to make sure we are eating. I was so glad they had the wonderful little binder made up with all the things we could eat at those different stages printed out.
I feel so much more at ease about the surgery after yesterday. I had a lot of questions answered at the education class I attended when I started this process, but yesterday relieved alot of fears. I am so excited.
I can't wait until the 24th. I start my liquid diet on Monday. I don't think it will be too bad during the week, but the weekend will be hard to get through.
I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Laproscopic RNY 8/14/06 Did not wish for re-fills. Plus I believe this is the right fit for me.
Topic: Insurance Approved, Surgery Aug 29, 2006!
Hi all!
I just found out this afternoon that my insurance company finally approved me! My surgery will be Aug 29th, 2006 and I'll be having a lap RNY.
I also got weighed today and found out that I have lost another 7 1/2 pounds, for a total pre-op loss of 16.5 pounds since 7/13. This has been accomplished primarily by pushing to get 100 grams of protein in each day. By the time I eat that protein, I am full and stay that way! I've been averaging 1300 calories a day and getting in an average of 93 grams of protein with 98 percent of that protein intake being from actual food as opposed to protein supplements/shakes. I've ordered some samples of various protein powders so that I can get hopping on trying out proteins.... I know now that keeping my protein intake up will be the biggest key to my post-op success.
Best wishes to my fellow pre-ops and those of you fortunate enough to be post-op too!
Hugs,

Topic: RE: Are you Bypass or Band???
Lap RNY tomorrow. Chose bypass 'cause it would be too easy for me to out-eat the band. I need more stringent bio-feedback when I make a poor food choice. I wanted something permenent. I also saw a statistic during my doctor's group presentation that showed that band patients were more likely to need a second surgery at some point. I would have to check with my doctor's office on the actual stat and source of information, but I recall that influencing my decision. Going for fills doesn't suit my personality. I conferred with my husband as to which he thought I would be more successful with and he thinks the bypass too. Lastly, while there are a number of different opinions about which surgery is more successful, the majority of the liturature today suggests that on whole, bypass has better success rate for more weight lost and kept off. That said, on this board there are many people who have shared their tremendous success with the band. And from other sources, I have heard great things about the lap band, but it just didn't seem like a good fit for me.
Hope this helps. I wish you well.
