I have done everything just waiting for insurance approvel for surgery. Would they have let me know by now if I need to lose weight before hand. I have not been told this yet??
Yes I know Red Deer like 10% loss. And for the same reason everyone else said. To show determination and to make the surgery safer. They work with you and have a dietitian and nutritionist that will help you out too.

Well I guess I will just have to continue on as best I can after I meet up with them if that is whats required. I am trying very hard right now at this moment even before appnt. to shed a few for my daughters grad. (need to dress shop!) and I know the first 20 are doable. It's after that everything goes to hell. Maybe it will all be the motivation I need. Summer is usually easier for me than winter anyway!
im from alberta and before my first surgery yes I needed to show them I can lose weight , usually 10 to 20 lbs mine was 51 lbs , but they do this for more then one reason ,, to see how devoted you are to this , also people who have a high bmi carry a lot of fat on there liver which they need some of that off to ensure a safe surgery too , that's why the pre op diet and it helps you change to a more healthy life also yes you do have follow ups for one year after surgery they are wonderful at weight wise in Edmonton for sure
Depending on a few factors such as how high your BMI is and where your weight is distributed and your weight history they will probably want you to lose some weight (probably 10% or more). The higher your BMI is the riskier the surgery is so they want to reduce that risk as much as possible. Also if you carry most of your weight in your belly they want to shrink that as much as possible before surgery. Also its important for them to see that you can make the lifestyle changes necessary to be successful. Remember surgery is not a miracle cure all it is a tool to help you but you still have to put in a lot of work.
There are lots of programs and groups that help support you long after surgery whichever clinic you are part of you will be for a long time.
I am just wondering if this is a common request among surgeons in Alberta anyway. Is there follow up services as well after if you have WLS in Alberta? I guess it depends on the surgeon. Please let me know your experiences!
Absolutely! Every time I watch 'my 600lb. Life' on tv. And probably most of us requiring WLS! I am more a sugar addict than a food addict and struggle with it every day. The DSM (diagnostic manuals psychiatrists and psychologists use) describes it as this:
Is there a simple way to define addiction? Another way of describing addiction is the presence of the 4 C's: Craving, Loss of Control of amount or frequency of use, Compulsion to use, Use despite Consequences.
Coke would be tough as withdrawal would be sugar and caffeine withdrawal. But the good news is after 3-5 minimum days detox (yes we even have to detox) you would feel so much better and the cravings should lessen. Like any addiction you simply can't have it! Isn't that awful! I know! Try eliminating sugar! It's in everything! You just have to figure out what works for you!
Tons of of great reading on Internet about it. Good luck!
I was put on the surgery waitlist in June 2014 and I am scheduled to have surgery on June 1. That is what they say the timeframe is typically, but it can go quicker depending on the availability with dr's and O.R. times. they are also getting a fourth surgeon this summer, so things may run a little faster than usual.
I believe you can make an apt with the psychologist with the dietician (I can't remember) but if not, don't be afraid to email Hannah Jocson at the office and ask about your next step and how you can make apt.
Good luck on your journey. It seems like a long road but once you get that surgery date, you realize it was all worth it.
HI, I'm new to this group. I was wondering if anyone has ever been told they have a food addiction? I just started seeing this new counsellor in Edmonton, and she suggested working though some of my problems from a Food Addiction perspective. She thinks i'm a food addict. I have to agree with her. I like my Coke. There is no way in hell i'm giving that up. I know I know the dieticans want me to stop it, but still!!!!! ok Has anyone else on here seen or heard of food addiction?? TIA
