Hi Kevin
What a nice Christmas present this is going to be for you! I couldn't believe it was going to happen even while they were prepping me for the surgery! I had wished for it for so long, then all I remember was being wheeled into the surgery room and that was it!! Hope you have a smooth surgery and get ready for a new year!!

Hi Melody-

I selected the lap-band because of its safety(mortality rate). I  went in for my surgery, and a couple of hours later I was on my way home. It was one easy surgery for me - when I awoke I had three Band-aids and one bandage a little bit bigger than a band-aid. My Dr. did the surgery laproscopically. I had little pain and that was mostly from gas. Actually I needed an antacid/anti-gas pill worse than I needed a painkiller.    I felt I took the safest route for WLS. Everybody I talked to who had RNY said "get the lap-band" because the Dr. can adjust it, and he can let it all the way out and tighten it right back up if you start gaining weight again. You can't do that  with RNY. My cousin had RNY and gained most of all of her weight back because the stomach stretches out. Like you said we only get one operation like this and insurance won't cover another operation if  the person stretches it out.. I felt the lapband would give me the best chances of long-term weight-control with the least complications. My infection was topical and is now cleared up so in a week maybe I can get my first fill!!

Congrats!  I am so happy for you and Dr Snyder is one of the best doctors.  I had
mine November 10th and do not regret a thing.  Let us know how you are doing
and good luck on your journey.  :o)

I just found out this morning that I now have a surgery date!  On the morning of 12/17/2008 I will go under to receive the Lap-Band.  Things were crazy today getting a few phone calls in to arrange things, but all is in order so far.  Wow, the feeling to knowing its going to happen, and soon, is exciting, frightening and strange all wrapped into one.

Hey-

Thanks for all the encouragement.  I should say that seeing a doc for the WLS won't likely happen til mid-February as my benefits don't kick in until Feb 1st.  I know they will cover one surgery and one plastic surgery once I've come close to my goal.

My question is this: Wouldn't Lap-Band be the preferred?  It's less invasive, reversible, and minimal hospital stay?

Sorry to hear about your infection Belinda.  Keep in touch!!

Thanks for easing my mind about the fountain area. Would you happen to know how i can get a job in one of the schools? In Texas, I was a substitute teacher and i'd like to do that in Colorado Springs but I think Colorado has higher standards .. which is a good thing. In Texas all that is required is a high school degree for substitute teachers but I think in Colorado you have to have a BA and some kind of license? I’m working on my degree, I just have 2 more classes to go but when I finish, I’d like to teach at a school, not just substitute …. I have no idea how this all works in Colorado. I thought it would be similar to Texas but I’m finding out it’s not.

You have gotten some really good suggestions!  I have lived in Colorado Springs my whole life and think it is one of the best place to be (the beach is the first)!
Fountain area is great, it is south of the Springs, but close enough to be "in the city".  Decent schools, the small town feel, and close to Ft. Carson.
District 12 is also south, just not as far as Fountain, great schools, a bit pricier, still nice.
District 2 in north of Ft. Carson, OK schools, not my pick (I graduated from there) and refused to buy our house in D2.
District 11 is the largest in the city and goes from central CS to the south end of the north part (confusing huh) decent, has the only baccalurate (sp) program in the city, and is instituting magnet schools in both middle and high schools.
District 49 is out east, on the north side of town, decent schools, newer neighborhoods, close to a lot of shopping.
District 20 is the northern most district, close to the Air Force Academy. Would not be my pick as an Army family.
There are more school districts, I just highlighted the big ones.  I work very north and we live pretty far south,  and to get to either Fountain or the north end of the city is no more than 25 minutes.
As far as houses go, there are good neighborhoods and bad no matter where you go.
Good luck,
Holly

My husband is also military and we've been stationed at Fort Carson for 7 years.  If you have to move, I think Fort Carson is one of the BEST duty stations.  We live in Fountain and LOVE it.  I NEVER want to leave here.   It is A LOT cheaper to live in Fountain.  The taxes are much cheaper than the local area and the school district is one of the best!  I also work for Fountain-Fort Carson School District Eight.  We have a WONDERFUL district and it is very close to post. Please visit www.ffc8.org.  I am the Secretary to the Superintendent and Board of Education, so I know A LOT about the District.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.  With the price range of the house you are looking for, I would stick with Fountain.  You get more house for your money.

One hundred years from now it will not matter what kind of house I lived in, how much money I had, or what my clothes were like, but THE WORLD MAY BE A LITTLE BETTER BECAUSE I WAS IMPORTANT IN THE LIFE OF A CHILD.
