Repliva and supplimentation

Ok Al's post got me thinking about my own supplimentation, and part of a converation we had at the NYC dinner....do you find that you are supplimenting more now, the further you come out from the DS? I find the further out I come, the more on target advice from Vitalady and Dina becomes to me personally.  For instance, my B12 levels which were stable for over a year have started to drop ...just a bit, but there is a drop none the less......my iron levels which were "ok" are now low enough that I have to go on a iron suppliment.   I'm not complaining, I get my blood work done VERY regularly so that I can keep an eye on these things, but I'm wondering if anyone else is finding that they are supplimenting more now then they were a year ago? 1 Year ago suppliments: 1 B complex 2 generic centrum 1 A&D 10,000 IUs of A 1 50,000 IU of D 3 times a week 4 calicum citrate Now 2 Super B complex 2 generic centrum 1 dry A 25,000 IUs 2 dry D 50,000 IUs 5-6 calcim citrate 1 rocalitrol 1 repliva 1 zinc It's only a few more pills...and no biggie except for the iron because you can't eat before or after it....WAAAAAAAAAA. Ok now to the iron.   I bought the repliva...but it's expensive, and I do not plan on doing it every monthat 33 dollars a month.  Is there a cheaper OTC iron that is equal to it?   Is the gentle iron from vitalady ok?  Didi t work for you?  How much do you have to take to equal the repliva? I have added more A and lots more D, and changed from calcium carbonate to half calcium carbonate and half calcium citrate. I have also added probiotics and stopped the Gas X. So far my iron and B vitamins are great. One year post-op: 2 MV, 2 ADEK's, 4 Gas X, two servings calcium carbonate , Flagyl 3 times a week Four years post-op: 2 MV; 2 ADEK's; 100,000 IU's Vit D; 25,000 IU's Vit A; one serving calcium citrate; one serving calcium carbonate; 2 probiotic capsules; and Flagyl 3 times a week. Plus tanning. We are all a little different, which is why we all need to have levels checked regularly and can't just all keep taking the same thing.

Just curious Carolyn, why even take the carbonate? I take citrate and have been since my gastric bypass. I was told that carbonate doesn't work on us, those of us who have had WLS. Or does it help for DSers then?

We still absorb SOME of the calcium in calcium carbonate, and the rest of it helps to bind free oxalates and keep them out of the bloodstream, thus hopefully (theoretically) helping to prevent kidney stone formation.

Should I be more concerned post DS about kidney stones than pre DS with a RnY?

I don't think so.  From the way it was explained to me, some people are more prone to kidney stones than others.  Those who get stones need to do whatever they can to avoid them.

Thanx Val. I have never had a kidney stone at all so do you think in your opinion, I should take some carbonate along with my citrate?

On another note, I did make your fluff with the cheese cake pudding. And it is okay to me. I think I would devour it if I used chocolate pudding. I am a chocolaholic and I take my chocolate any way I can. Have you ever used chocolate pudding for the fluff? Thanx.

I've done it with pistachio pudding and it was pretty good! On the calcium note, I only take Calcium Citrate because it's supposed to be absorbed the easiest and my doc didnt recommend carbonate at all either.

ok, the gal whose note is below mine, Kimby, says her hubby had no problems with stones before DS and then after DS he had a few bouts, took carbonate, and has had no problems. Make a mental note to self, ask Dr. K his opinion or my primary. Thanx for the info Val.

DH never had kidney stones until postop DS.  He had a couple rough bouts, but when he added calcium carbonate it improved.  He hasn't had any trouble since 4/07.  We figured it couldn't  hurt and it has been great! Kimby
