Hibiclens

I can top you. My surgeon's manual says I'm supposed to bathe twice daily for three days before surgery, using antibacterial soap.

Not bloody likely, is all I can say to that. I would irritate the holy crap out of my skin and probably leave it more open to infection than doing the two Hibiclens thing. I ran into big problems when I first went on an insulin pump by cleaning the infusion sites with Dial antibacterial, before also swabbing with an antiseptic wipe. The sites were really raw and irritated, and magically improved once a very smart nurse suggested I stop using the Dial.

Having tested for blood sugar and given injections many times daily for 24 years, I am somewhat skeptical that the average germs on our abdominal skin are that dangerous. Sure, if you are dirty, have been gardening, around sick people, etc., then of course you need to clean that up. But I stopped using alcohol wipes for finger sticks and injections at least 20 years ago, and I've NEVER had an infection. And yanno, I'm diabetic and more prone to infections. Now, scrapes and stuff, yes I wash those off immediately with hydrogen peroxide and good old soap and water.

But note: I'm not saying you shouldn't do what your surgeon says. Just be cautious if you have sensitive skin.

That Dial stuff really stinks, too, doesn't it?   I can't stand it.   I'm not one of these who thinks that we should anti-bacterial all germs out of existance on a daily basis.   But I really do understand the reason behind the hibiclens scrubs.   The nurse in the preop testing center will give you a bottle of hibiclens or something similar with a different name, Jenn.

I don't use alcohol wipes for injections or fingersticks at home, either Jenn.   I figure I've got all those germs at home, anyway.   Plus the fact that nursing research has been done that there's not much point in it at home.   But in the (relatively unlikely) event that I have to test or inject away from home, then I do use them then.   Even though I've read that you have to scrub for over a minute for the alcohol swabs to actually kill the germs.   I think the concept is more to just wash them away.   Well, the Concept is probably to kill them.   The actuality is that it just washes them away.

You know, your idea about using alcohol wipes away from home is sensible. Especially while traveling or something. Thanks!

I'll use the hibiclens or whatever, but fuggedabout showering six times in three days. I mean, any bacteria that can last more than 24 hours and two showers on the skin is going to laugh at those extra four showers, I'm thinking.

Hi! I'm going to use this stuff called Dyna-Hex 4 that my surgeon's office gave me. I wash with it the night before from my neck to just above my privates (they said not to get it on the privates--do I sound like a middle school kiddo?--as it can burn in that area) and then again the morning of surgery. It sounds like a great idea.

Can you believe it's almost our turn??

Thanks to you and Storm mentioning the burning in certain areas.  Nurse didn't mention that.

Yeah, it's nearly here.  I remember when I first got the call with the date thinking I had so much to do and lots of time to do it in.  Not any more.  Good luck on Monday.  Hope your stay is uneventful and your recovery is speedy.

I just have to shower twice a day with an antibacterial soap such as dial or lever 2000 starting 3 days prior to my surgery "paying special attention to the trunk of the body and getting in any and all folds of skin." Haha thats what my directions are anyway!
In order to succeed, you must proceed.

I was told to use dial antibacterial body wash the night before and morning of surgery.  Paying special attention to my torso and skin folds, belly button etc.

During my consult with my surgeon, his bariatric NP gave me a bottle of Hibiclens with instructions to use half of it in the shower the evening before my surgery and the second half in the shower the morning of my surgery.  I was warned not to wash above my shoulders.  I could, however, wash my face and hair with the usual cleanser and shampoo, respectively, before applying the Hibiclens on the rest of me.

I was not allowed to use body lotion or deodorant after either shower session.

I could not stand the smell of Hibiclens either.

The hospital gave me one of the "sponges" that the Drs use when they scrub into the OR.  I had to use that on my entire belly area the morning of my surgery!!  They said to use the soft side, not the rough side!!  It foamed up to a nice lather!!  Didn't smell bad or anything!!
