Hi Sharon, congratulations on the hard work going thru this process twice and dealing with the adjustments needed for your cir****tances. It's never easy but hopefully good as you eventually settle into it.

You experience sounds like a one off procedure to take your specific stomach scarring and other needs into consideration. My experience is a little different in that I had a SADi DS which reduces the stomach a modest amount compared to a standard DS. It then leaves a 400cm common channel instead of 150cm or so common channel in the std DS. Many people incorrectly think this means less weight loss. My was probably a little bit slower pace but eventually 100% of excess weight and the longer common channel has no issue keeping it off.

Your results may be slower but steady long term. Good luck and pls keep posting.

Topic: RE: "Dieting" after DS

I diet but not like before. My dirty little secret is some lifestyle changes don't stick. My habits and tastes are very different than pre-op but I can still, at 6 years out, fall into some of the eating traps from my pre-op days.

I did reset the first year and a half and changed a lot but I'm 61 and I spent more years making bad habits than I have living a healthy lifestyle. :)

So, I diet in the sense that I watch my food choices and track but I can't say I ever feel hungry. I cut carbs, I lower portions a little mainly by doing more protein shakes, protein becomes my first choice, and I try and exercise more.

I'm 6:1 and hovered around 230 (surgery weight of 464) for 3 years or so. In the last year I have gotten to routinely weigh in around 220 with an eventual goal of onederland but I don't obsess over it like I used to. I just lean into the DS more when I am tracking than other wise.

I wouldn't ever use the word deprived for my feelings anymore. Not since the surgery but do I feel a little disappointed and happy that I know not to have that second piece of birthday cake or skip the ice cream. Just a little but knowing I can do 15 miles on my bike now makes it a good trade off.

I even go with my nephew to WW. The latest iteration is closer to the DS diet with emphasis on protein I just don't follow the whole low fat portion and I like the group dynamics. It's mostly to support my nephew but I gain too so it is a win-win. I just remember my needs are a little different than what they think the requirements are.

Thank you Janet, i don't know the length of my common channel...these are questions that I'm going to ask next week for my first follow up.

I agree, i have done alot of research and never heard of the Doc not reducing the stomach hence my frustration.

I have been getting in all my protein and water with no problems.. it just sucks.

I'll know more once i see my Doc.

Thank you!!

Sharon I've been on these boards for 16 years and I've honestly never met anyone who only had the switch. Since you still have a pouch, you should still have some restriction (as opposed to a full sized stomach).

What I learned when I had the DS (my one and only WLS) it was explained to me that the weight loss will come primarily from the restriction of the sleeve (obviously helped out by the malabsorption of the switch). Then it's the switch that has helped me maintain my weight loss for 15 years.

Your weight loss may be slower because you don't have any real restriction. You still have the ability to eat the same amount of food you did before surgery. Do you know how long your surgeon made your common channel?

As a new DSer I aimed for 30 grams of protein by the first 30 days post-op, 60 grams by the first 60 days, 90 by 90, et****il you hit your goal amount of protein. Stay hydrated. Once you're cleared, start taking vitamins (but that's something you can build up to).

Yes, you're correct. I did go to a Specialist which my GP referred, I did research for over 6 months...

I'm at the stage of just wanting to know if anyone else can relate and how they dealt /dealing with it.

So you had a bypass (was that an RNY?) then a band over the bypass? So you had a pouch to start with? DS from RNY is really hard and considering you had a band over that I'm not surprised you had too much scar tissue. Did you go to a revision specialist?

Thank you @PattyL... i previously had the lapband. The scar tissue came from that.

I have never been a sugar lover, so thats not a problem. I have hormonal problems and also hypothyroidism. I work out 5days a week of whick i have a personal trainer for 3 of the 5 days. My metabolism is almost non existent hence why my GP referred me to having the DS Surgery.
