I am not sure if there is a Weight Loss Surgical Center in your area or not but you might want to check them out.  Web site is www.wtlsc.com . Good Luck, Christie

Topic: Any KS Medicaid people?
Hey all - My mom is looking at having RNY done. She is on Medicare and Medicaid and was told that Medicare covers WLS. Her BMI is over 60 so that isn't a problem. Her PCP is the one referring her but we are having problems finding a surgeon who takes Medicare. Has anyone gotten the surgery using state insurance? If so, who/where did you go? Help or  Suggestions? we tried to call her social worker who was totally worthless said she didn't even know what the surgery was. Thanks all!

I've just only seen the commericals.  My surgeon was Dr. Joseph Petelin in Shawnee, KS.  He is very, very good with excellent office and nursing staff.  Hope this helps!!  Good luck on your journey. NPROGRESS

....at long last!  After seven months of study and waiting, I am glad to have finally taken the plunge.  I was somewhat nervous, but Dr. K and her staff at IABS/MISH in Lenexa were outstanding!  Feel pretty good now-- just a little sore throat from the tube and tenderness at the incision points.  Oh-- and sleepy.  Looking forward to taking it easy for a few days.

Banded Jan. 7, 2008; APL (14 cc); 4 fills (10.2 cc) so far

Today is your big day! I just wanted to introduce myself and say Hi! I had my band placed on Christmas eve!  What a present! I am feeling pretty good, except for the itching from the tape I really have not had any complaints.  My port area bothers me a little once in a while, but it is getting better each day. I have found this forum to be encouraging and informative. I have met some really nice people who are walking a similar path and have found support here.  I wish you the very best, Christie

I didn't say any of those were reasons to not have DS. I said that they were potential side effects. They are. Just because these side effects are minimal and not bothersome in your case doesn't doesn't mean they don't happen. They are still there, common and must be considered. I didn't tell anyone to have or not to have any procedure. I recommended research.
You chose to have DS as your weight loss solution. It seems to have worked out very well for you. I chose to have RNY. It has worked out quite well for me. That means we both made good decisions for ourselves. I have no regrets. I would do it again in a heart beat. It would seem that you feel the same.

I agree.. research all surgery types and choose the one that you can live with. That being said, The reasons listed above are not reasons to not have a DS * Frequent soft bowel movements (up to 4-6 per day)- I go twice a day * Frequent passing of foul-smelling gas- I passed foul smelling gas befor I had the DS. Having the DS didn't make it smell any worse or better...**** Stinks! * Changes in body odor-Yep its from ketosis. A side effect of rapid weight loss.  Happens with the RNY too. Also my wife says my body oder is much better now than when I weighed 450 lbs.. I'll take that change * Gas pains or bloating- Depends on what I eat. High carb and simple sugars will cause extra gas but it's easilly controlled. * Hair loss- Happens with RNY too.. BTW.. I didn't lose any hair after surgery. Hair loss  does not happen to everyone. * Intolerance of certain foods (varies from person to person)-I'm not sure about this one.. I havn't found anything I can't eat. I was eating solid food befor I left the hospital. There are some who do have problems with meats shortly after surgery but seem to get over it in a few months. Your right, malnutrition is a problem with both surgeries supplementation is absolutely neccessary for both surgeries. The part of the stomach that is removed is the part that contains "grelin" the hunger hormone. That part cannot be reversed but the malabsorbtion part can be.
