Topic: RE: wondering about surgery after Christmas
Hi . My only reply would be how is your will power ? If you think missing out on all the candy and cookies  will bother you it might be hard. I can say though for 3 weeks after surgery none of that bother me at all. I was not hungery and had no problem with any food . I guess it depends on how close to the holidays you have it I personaly would vote for thanksgiving . I had mine in may .  I have lost 45 lb .so far  I do indulge in birthday cakes and some ice cream now. I lose  at 1 lb  aweek. I would do better but has you can tell my will power is limited but I don,t eat has much .  Paul

Topic: RE: going to tallgrass Sat. meeting
I had my meeting on March 10th at Tallgrass...was selfpaying---didnt have the psyc exam yet...but had lapband surgery May 21st.....so little over 2 months from the date of the seminar.  Not sure what their scheduling is like.  The semiar...was a video presentation...about the surgeries...all kinds...then a question and answer period...ask any question you want...then they gave out packets, plus there was a book they required you to buy on lapband...I think the cost was like 14-15$.  Then they had veteran RNY and lapband people come in and talk for a little bit...we could also ask them questions.  Seems like it was 2 years... but in reality it was quite fast.  Good luck in your journey...feel free to pm me with any questions.  mary

Topic: wondering about surgery after Christmas
I meant to ask this in my last post.  I am wondering if I can't get surgery before Christmas, if any of you think it would be really hard, having gone through the pre op diet, etc. to try and do it over Christmas.  I had hoped to do it over Thanksgiving or Christmas so not to miss much work.  We have quite a lot of time off after Christmas.  But I just don't know,  we will have a house full for approx. 5 days around the holidays.

Topic: going to tallgrass Sat. meeting
I have shuffled my schedule and so am going to be able to go to Tallgrass for their Sat. meeting.  I guess this is where it really starts.  HUH????  I am not sure what to expect at the meeting Sat. but I guess will receive a packet and start the paper work.  I am going to be self pay.  I have my psyc. eval done, as I got that when i had started talking to LivLite about bypass.  Then I talked to my reg. Dr. and he encouraged me to think about lap band.  He said he had a lady that is doing great with it and since I have a about 100 lbs to loose it would be a good thing.  Wow,  am I glad I checked with him.  I had just not thought about it.  That is why I guess I wasn't reading and learning enough yet. I am sure Tallgrass will help me make the right decision.  I kind of stumbled on Tallgrass when checking out the one in Overland Park.  Wonder how long it will take to get a surgery date?

I felt totally like you did....thinking of everything reason under the sun why I shouldn't be doing this.  But then telling myself why I am doing this....that I NEED this surgery....that I can't go on living with the weight I was and leading to some serious health issues. I kept asking myself if I didn't have this surgery...where would I be in 1 month...2 months....I would more than likely weigh more....be more disgusted with my weight....maybe have some serious health issues.  You will be fine....The nursing staff at Tallgrass are wonderful...before you know it they will be waking you up and saying its done....I'm so excited for you and your surgery....Mary

Thanks for the reply.  I am limited with my insurance (BCBSKC) to either a LapBand or the RNY (open or lap).  With our previous insurance carrier, 2 employees got a BPD.  One is doing really well and is still at goal weight 4 years post op and the other has gained all his weight back.  I initially considered the LapBand and have been approved twice before only to have the surgeons abruptly quit the practice.  My daughter in Colorado then had an RNY with marvelous results.  Thirteen months later she is near goal weight and has had no complications.  That is when I decided on the RNY.  I went to KC Bariatric because they have a solid program with two great surgeons.  I am finishing up my pre-op stuff and I hope to have final approval and a date on the calendar in a month or so.  It has taken me nearly 4 years to get this far with the insurance changes, surgeons quitting etc.  I am happy with KC Bariatric and they are working hard to get the job done. Hello I was wondering if you ever did any research on the Duodenal Switch (DS for short)?  I was all set to have Dr Hitch**** do a RNY on me, untill I discovered the benifits of the DS. It has better long term weight loss than other surgeries and the best part is that you can eat normally and still lose weight. I can literally eat anything I want, without fear of dumping. I have a fully fuctioning stomach ( just smaller) I can eat sweets (just not alot of them) I can eat fried foods and high fat foods without fear of gaining any weight because with the DS, we malabsorb about 80% of the fat we eat.  The only thing I steer away from is high carb foods, mostly because they make me a gassy and with the DS, Carbs are not malabsorbed. My only requirements are to, get in 100+ grams of protein a day, take 1 multi vitamin in the morning and an iron supplement in the evening. I have blood tests taken 2 times a year to make sure I am healthy and also to see if I need to tweak my supplements. There was no 2 week pre-op liquid diet and no post-op diet to follow either. When I left the hospital, I was told to eat whatever I could tolerate and I havn't looked back since. In 14 months, I have lost 200 lbs and have about 20-30 more to go.  Luckily, the closest DS surgeon in this area is in Omaha, Nebraska. I say lucky because Dr Anthone is one of the top DS surgeons in the world.  If you are interested, he has an informational seminar once a month, usually on the second thursday of each month. I live in Emporia and it was worth the 4 hr drive just to listen to him speak. Sorry, I didn't mean to go on and on here but I just like to get the word out about this surgery option. I know it is not one of the popular ones being sold here, but for me, it is the best one period. Let me know if ya have any questions and I will be glad to answer. Good Luck
