so how long did it take you before you actually had surgery?  I will have the psyc. eval done by the middle of Oct.  I was hoping to get surgery after christmas so I could use some of my off time from school so I would n't have to use as many sick days. How long did it take before you felt ok, as in go back to work?    What pre op stuff did you have to do, like eat, etc.  thanks.  How much wt. have you lost so far?

Is Dr. Hoehn the same dr. as the first person that posted had.  Her surgery was at Tall grass in Topeka.  Does he go to different sites?  So how much have you lost since June surgery?  How are you feeling and how long did it take for you to recover fully.  I would like to miss as little work as possible.  I am also wondering what you had to do before your surgery as far as eating etc.  Thanks and good luck to you.

I am virtually certain I'll go for the band.  I have lost >100 pounds at least four times in my life and always gained it back (and more).  I'm concerned that I won't be able to keep the weight off no matter what I do (including WLS), but from what I've read the band is an ever-present friend that helps keep you "honest."  As someone who struggles more with portion control than sweets, milkshakes, etc., that appeals to me.  It also costs less, is less risky and doesn't alter my internals as much.  Having said all that, RNY looks like an outstanding option as well and I certainly couldn't fault anyone who goes that way.    I have been reading various boards the last few months and have followed with interest the threads that discuss whether or not people are happy with their band, would do it again, etc.  Despite the different struggles folks have, I'd say at least 90% are glad they were banded, call it the best thing they have ever done, life-saving etc.  That is impressive to me.  Near as I can tell it can be rough for awhile, but eventually you get acclimated, get restriction, etc., and then you're off to the races.  Oh yes-- I also have a friend who was banded at Tallgrass and is doing very well.   I just turned 50 and have come to the realization that WLS is probably my best and only shot at real change.  I am pretty good at managing things in life and it bothers me that I simply cannot get this problem under control in my own strength.  Oh well-- thank God WLS is an option! Sounds like you are on the fence.  Which way are you leaning?

Topic: Support group in Wichita?
I am actually 5 years out of surgery. To make my decision pre-surgery, I attended a support group in Wichita. Lisa Probst was the leader. Is anything like that going on now?  Just curious, plus my husband is considering getting the lap band surgery. I think it would be helpful if he checked out people's experiences face-to-face, so to speak. Any of the golden oldies still go on this site? There were several of us that had surgery in Junction City in 2002. Kathy Brotton Newton

I had my lap band done on 6/5 and was a self pay patient at The KC Bariatric Center, it is also a Center of Excellence. They are located in Shawnee Mission. Dr. Hoehn is my surgeon and I've heard a lot of good stuff about his partner Dr. Hitch**** as well. My surgery cost me 16,250 total. This included my hospital stay, dr appt, surgeon, etc... It even covers fills up to 1 year.  I'm very pleased with Dr. Hoehn and his office. I had my surgery at the Heartland Spine and Specialty Hosiptal and I really liked it there.

Yes, apparently the doctor's group for the seminar I attended does not work out of the Shawnee Mission Medical Center but rather another hospital in that area.

Just to clarify something: Shawnee Mission Medical Center received their Center of Excellence approval on January 22, 2007.

good luck with your surgery.  Thanks for the info.  I am leaning towards Tallgrass.  I am closer to Junction City and the livlite center but they don't do lap band and I am now thinking that is more what I want. Why did you decide LapBand? Again, good luck.  Will be anxious to know how you are doing. Keep in touch.

Hello: I havn't been banded yet my surgery is scheduled for October 15 at Tallgrass in Topeka with Dr. Hamilton.  I really didn't research anywhere else as I live in Topeka and I didn't want to have to travel for my fills..  My experience with Tallgrass so far has been wonderful.   Dr. Hamilton is a very warm and funny doctor and I have heard nothing but good things about the other doctors there.  The staff that I have dealt with so far have been very nice and cheerful which makes it all easier..   Tallgrass takes care of everything that has to be submitted to insurance company I didn't have to do a whole lot except meet with a pysch doctor and nutritionist, and the sleep clinic.     They hold a seminar once a month that is mandatory before they will even see you.  Their website is www.topekaobesitysurgery.com  or you can call Brenda Holliday, bariatric surgery coordinator at 785-228-4773 she is also a patient and so is Dr. Hamilton they both had RNY.  Good luck on your journey.   They are also now a Center for Excellance
