My doctor told me that drinking with food will "Wash away" the food into the lower part of your stomach, making you feel hungry again. I am pre-op, but I can tell that this is going to be one of my biggest problems with this surgery. I can't comprehend how I am going to be able to eat without drinking. I am worried about choking or something....

how many months was it until you found restriction, and how much did it take in your band?

Ditto on it washing the food down. I was so adimant I wouldn't be able to do this, yet it has been surprisingly easy. I make sure I drink a lot of water between meals, and sometimes I have to take a sip if something is too dry. I also thought I would never be able to give up pop, and that too has been a breeze, whoda thunk? Shari 10/14/2004 265/249/140

This is an extremely important bad habit to break. Drinking with meals will accomplish one of two things: 1. Can flush food out of the pouch, which complete defeats the purpose of the band to let you feel full/satisfied on a reduced portion. Makes room for more food. 2. If your pouch is full enough so that the liquid can't flu**** through the stoma, you will PB (barf) it back up. Not fun, and anytime we can prevent barfing, we should...the more you PB/barf, the more you're at risk for problems. You don't "have" to drink with meals....it's a habit. The Continental way of eating is not to drink with meals. The one thing it accomplishes even for non-banded folks is allows you to eat more. If you're drinking enough fluids throughout the day, you won't be thirsty. Don't even have a glass of anything at the table during your meal. You can drink right up to the point where you're going to start eating, but you should not drink during or for at least 45-60 minutes after the meal. It defeats the band. Nancy 394/299/180
