I am now on my 4th day of liquid and I did cheat last night and I am wondering if anyone else has done this and where you still able to have the surgery.

Hell yeah! Honestly, how can they expect people to have NO calories for a week? My theory is that the 2 weeks of liquid diet is to turbo charge the weight loss. At the time I felt terrible and thought I was the worst bandster in the world. Don't feel guilty--you'll be on solids in no time.

I think usually surgeons *****quire these pre-op semi-fasts are operating under the school of thought that it may help shrink the liver which could make the surgery a little easier. There are 2 schools of thought on this, however, there have been no studies to show that it makes any difference. It all comes down to who taught them the banding procedure, etc. My surgeon doesn't do this...her feeling is that she'd rather have us at full strength so we can heal quickly and well. But again, it's just the other school of thought. Both methodologies seem to work just fine Nancy 394/299/180

Yes....... like tonight for dinner I had chef boy ardee pasta shells and meatballs about 1 cup, Im still supposed to be on the full liquid diet, but my appetite is picking up and I need some more substance!!! Chef boy ardee was very mushy and I chewed the heck out of it. I feel fine. But during the rest of the day I have the Medifast shakes, yogurt, cottage cheese. Im kinda glad to hear other cheat, well just a little right??!! I cant wait until I can eat normal!! Erica

Hi Ashey, I have a new respect for my doctor , he only put me on a low fat, low calorie diet a week before my surgery and only the 2 days before my surgery did he put me on clear liquids only. I think we all cheat a little it's our nature .. just be very careful. I never made it past day three after surgery before I was eating soft stuff like baby food fruits n yougart and soft stuff . Best Wishes- Candie

I believe that you will find that the majority of us cheated. If we were able to stick to a specific diet we wouldn't be fat. I do suggest that you continue to try not to cheat and to also be sure to cheat with something that is going to run right through you. No meats, or things that your liver would have to work at. You will have the surgery. The only issue you may have if you cheat big time is not having your surgery done via lap. If your liver is large, your surgeon will open you up. I had trouble not being able to chew anything so I cheated with chex mix. I measured out 1/2 cup and would only allow myself to eat what was in the cup. I figured that this was a minimal amount of cheating and it gave me a lot of chewing and flavor in a small amount of food.

Just remember no cheating that last day before surgery!! It's for your own safety when under anesthesia. I don't know the exact number of hours you need on liquids before surgery, but I know it's crucial! Anyone else out there know the exact number of hours on clear liquids (then no liquids) before anesthesia? Donna C

Hi Donna, The clear liquids vary from surgeon to surgeon. I've heard surgeon's orders of no clear liquid diet prior to banding. This isn't the norm. Usually it's 24-48 hours clear liquids. Usually it's nothing by mouth after midnight. Also depends what time your surgery is. I'd say 8-12 hours.

I'd say I stuck to my pre-op diet about 60% of the time. The only thing I was stringent about was clear liquids 24 hours before surgery, just b/c I was afraid I would be nauseous & I didn't want to throw up. Don't worry, just do your best & you'll be fine. Candi 276/250/150
