Why wait after drinking BEFORE meals?

It completely makes sense to me why we shouldn't drink with meals or after, but I've read that we should wait for a half an hour after drinking BEFORE eating a meal. I don't understand this because I've watched my upper GIs and all the liquid is emptied from the top part within a minute or so. So why the need to wait?

I never have waited before meals. In a restaurant I'll drin****il they serve me, then I set my glass aside. Nancy

I don't either, but I'm sure someone does. I've never really waited after drinking--it's bad enough we have to wait 1hr after eating to drink again, IMO makes it hard to get everything in! BTW my dr.'s office says 15min after drinking I don't wait after drinking--now I'm sure someone will come along to tell us we're stretching our pouches lol.

Ditto for me what everyone else said. I drink right up to the time I eat then stop for at least an hour after my last bite. I read on this board somewhere that the no drinking prior to eating was a holdover from the RNY surgery. So it does not apply to the lap band. Hmmmm. All I know is since I read that, I've been guzzling the liquids right up to eating. Patrice

I can only speak from my own experience on that one. I have watched the barium from my fills take some time to trickle through. I assume that any fluid would do the same. Because of that, I observe the half-hour rule. *************************************************************** "Greetings from the Rainforest" "Any advice in this post is based solely on my experience.
