How fast does liquid move through the pouch?
Hi, all. Can anyone tell me how fas****er (or a similar liquid) moves through an empty pouch?
I'm working hard on sipping, sipping, sipping, but my water-chugging habit is very hard to break! This morning, I drank a half bottle of water in no time at all (I just wasn't thinking!), and have been worrying ever since. Will this stretch the pouch? Or will water drain straight through? (Again - assuming a completely empty, first-thing-in-the-morning pouch...)
Thanks for your thoughts!

Water moves right through the pouch as any liquid does...hope this helps....
Water is not going to stretch your pouch...

It can vary depending on how tight your band is, but mos****er type liquids move through quite fast. If you didn't experience any discomfort when you drank the water you probably did not do anything to damage yourself. I have, on occasion, taken a BIG drink of water while I was tight ot too soon after eating and believe me, you know. You can feel all the liquid sitting there at the bottom of your throat, slowly draining through. Most of the time though, water just goes right through with no problems.

Not sure what you mean.
The band is placed about 2-3" below where the esophagus joins the top of the stomach...it's like a little belt...it cinches that area in so you get what looks like a weird hourglass (very uneven, bottom-heavy hourglass). The pouch is the top part of the hourglass...the stoma (where the band is) is the channel between the top and bottom parts. The banding creates a small pouch that is what we fill with our smaller portions of food then it trickles down to the rest of the stomach.

Water should go right through...it just sounds like your post-op swelling has gone down.
Sometimes if we drink very cold liquid, that'll "clench" things up a little so then won't go through immediately. It'll be very obvious (feeling-wise) when that happens. It would come back up if you continued to drink. You'd know.
No you can't stretch the pouch on liquids.

Water and other fluids should always go right thru. The stoma , with a good fill, is about pea-sized, and fluids go thru easily.
Take a funnel with an opening about pea sized, and pour fluid thru - that's the same! With a good fill, as with the funnel, if you put a lot in at once, it will back up a bit and not go thru right away.
Fluids can stretch the pouch if the stoma is tight and we drink a lot at once, and it the fluid backs up. THis is why the "sipping" guideline is impt. Pouch Stretching can also occur if we have a tight fill (usually TOO tight) and continue to eat more than about 1-1.5 cups of food per meal.
