Mirena Users - Weight Gain?
Sorry, it seems like I am the only downer on it.
Hopefully you will have better results. I have three friends who have it and none of them have had periods or cramps wince having it place. Me on the other hand..I cramped and bleed from day one.

Yeah, I spotted all during the first two months and not to be gross but there were not so pleasant other things as well. My gyn explained that the IUD thins the lining of the uterus which makes it harder for eggs to attach. Uterine sluffing is apparently nasty.
But my periods are definitely lighter 1 maybe 2 days and not heavy at all. I was looking at possibly having a partial hysterectomy because my periods were so heavy...now everything is great.

I've had my Mirena for almost 3 years now. After I got it I bled on and off for about 45 days. After that I didn't have a cycle at ALL for 18 months. I get a regular 5-7 day cycle now (or I DID pre-op) but it is VERY light. After surgery I had 15 days of bleeding, they tell me that it's common, and now Aunt Flo was a no show, lol!
As for the weight gain. I'm fairly sure I gained weight with my Mirena. I was Breast Feeding full time and post partum and should have been losing weight and instead gained about 15 lbs. I did a 90 day cycle of phentermine with no luck either. That said, it doesn't at all seem to be hindering me losing it now that I'm banded. I've lost over 30 lbs and I'm just a month out.

I've had my Mirena for 3 years now and I absolutely love it. I have gained about ten pounds, but its hard to say whether or not it was caused by my IUD. I asked my Doc about the weight gain issue before I got it and she said that you're more likely to gain weight from the pill than Mirena. I wouldn't worry about it too much. I used to have the heaviest, most painful periods and now I don't even have them. It has made my life sooooooo much easier. It does take your body a few months to adjust, but its all worth it in the end.
I'm so glad you asked this question. I had the IUD placed a few mths ago, i only have about 1 wk out of the mth that i don't spot at all. But my periods themselves have lightened up by more then half. I'm beginning to wonder when they will dissapear like other people say they do. And i wish the spotting would stop. Really puts a damper on my sex life , if ya know what i mean.
They were sooo heavy since having my daughter a cpl of yrs ago. But as for the weight gain, i didn't gain any before having my band done on 4-1. I'm so glad not to have to worry about getting pregnant now that i have the band and the weight is coming off. I lost about 70lbs after i got married in 04 and BOOM! I got pregnant 9 mths into the marraige. Of course i gained it all back with the baby. That's how i got preg. with my son 11 yrs ago too. Lost 35lbs and BOOM. At 42 i don't think i could handle another one. lol. I wouldn't worry about gaining weight because of the IUD. Good luck and God bless.

Kristi Ladies:
Many thanks to all of you for sharing your experiences with Mirena! I feel so much better about my choice, given that the majority of you have not gained weight from it. Also, bleeding/spotting for a while seems the norm, so I'll just deal with it and look forward to life without heavy periods.
