Mirena Users - Weight Gain?

Three weeks ago I had a Mirena IUD placed to help with extremely heavy periods.  Since then, I've read that some women using Mirena experience weight gain, or have trouble losing weight .  If you have a Mirena, can you please tell me what your experience has been?   Thanks!

I haven't had any weight issues from mine.  I don't know exactly how much I have lost since I had mine placed, it was last summer.  But my slow down with the weightloss was only my fault.   I love my Mirena, no more periods( maybe 1 day every few months), no cramps and I don't have to think about birthcontrol.   Good luck with yours!   Chrissy

I had it for a year and bleed everyday the whole time. I loved the fact that I didn't have to worry about birth control and my gyn kept telling me to give it a little while everytime I went .... a year of bleeding was enough....I gave up. I did not gain weight thoug. Hopefully your experience will be better than mine. I am using Nuva Ring now and love love love it.

Mechell: Thanks for sharing your experience.  I have been spotting every day, and have cramps, but I guess that can be expected for the first month or so.  I'm glad you were able to find an alternative that worked!

I had mine for the full 5 years. sure I did gain weight, but I don't know if it was the mirena because i was always gaining weight. I only had mine removed about 6 months ago, so I definitly lost weight while I had it in. I LOVED it!

I also pretty much didn't have a period at all while I used it.

Dev: Thanks for sharing -- my Ob/Gyn is well aware of my weight issues, so I don't think he'd recommend this for me if he saw a lot of weight gain from it.  So far, it seems that board members have not had weight issues from it. Lynn

I had a Mirena IUD placed one month after my LAP Band surgery. I don't believe that it has altered my weight loss. It is an extremely low dose of hormones. I'm very hormone sensitive and could not take any kind of birth control pill. They would completely screw up my hypoglycemia. I've had no problems with the IUD. It has been a liberating experience. Hardly any period (except for the first 2 months).

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. -

Dobbie: Thanks for sharing.  I'm very hormone sensitive, too.  During the first two months, did you spot a lot?  How about cramping?  I can deal with that if it means having fewer and lighter periods! Lynn
