Is there a relationship between your goal and the stupid chart?

Hi Everyone -  I am just wondering how people decided on a goal number. Did you use the height/weight charts? or pick a different number?  For me - I am 5'2" so the chart says I should weight about 125. Dude. That is a little number. I will be happy to be in onederland, ecstatic if I hit 145 - which is my goal, and possibly ******ic if I get to 125.  Also - honk if you think those charts are stupid! Deb

I agree! I find the idea body weight scale gets people very lean and too thin. I decided my goal should be between 150-160lbs. That would be a dream come true. I don't think everyone looks good or is healthy  when they only weigh 120lbs. If your small boned maybe thats OK for you. If you are muscular and have bigger bones it's necessary to weigh more

I have set my goal based on the BMI charts - I want to be in the "normal" range.  When I get closer, I will adjust it if I am happy where I am based on my clothes size, etc.

10 cc band - 2/27 - 4 cc; 4/10 - 1.5 cc; 5/21 - 2 cc; 11/19 - 1 cc; 7/8 - .5 cc  = 9 cc total

My goal is 140.  I cannot honestly remember being 140, I think it might have been 8th or 9th grade....back before I weighed myself and ever stressed about it! My "charts" say 120-150.  I think personally I would be happy at 155 (ONLY TEN MORE FREAKING POUNDS) but that is right at the edge of a normal BMI. So I decided to go under by 10 lbs to give myself a 10 lb buffer within the normal BMI range. I do think we should all be aiming for a normal BMI - it's still hard for me to believe that I would EVER come this far so quickly......but the farther you get along your weight loss journey, the more achievable it becomes.  Might as well go all the way to becoming healthy - don't sell yourself short! You can do it if you want!! If you don't want to, well, that's another story altogether and entirely your choice!

My doctor helped me come up with my number of 170 because he thought it sounded reasonable and was "do-able."  He also said when I have plastic surgery (I have the awful skin "apron" that will eventually  need to be removed) that would take me down another 15-20 pounds.  That made sense to me and gave a place to start!  I don't think that chart is even reasonable--and when was it last updated??

I chose 150 because it was in the Normal range for me......If I don't get there I won't be devastated. I've always been comfortable at 160-170 pounds. My doc just told me that he wouldn't consider me a success unless I lost at least 100#. He said anything after that was up to me.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. -

I am 5'6" and it says I should be between 130 and 155, I have my goal set at 145 but honestly if i get to 175 i will be Queen of the world!  I have contemplated changing my goal number but then again, it's just a number.  Go by how you feel and i guess get as near the chart as is comfortable for you.   Kris

I put my goal at 118.  But if you notice in my sig I put ?? after it....I feel like I'm really not going to know until I get closer.  My main goal is to be healthy and feel good about myself. How I picked 118 is that it is right smack dab in the middle of the "normal" BMI range for me.  I'm only 5'1. My surgeons goal for me was 130-140.  I asked his opinion of 118 and he said "that's fantastic and I know you can do it." I don't think BMI charts are stupid but do feel they should be used w/caution.  I know ppl who are skinny and seem to have very thin bones.  I know others who are skinny w/bigger bones.   I once had a doc that told me I should weigh 105 lbs!!  He said that you start @ 100 lbs and then add 5 lbs for every foot that you are over 5 feet.    I didn't weight that even when I was skinny!!!

I didn't see any charts in my Drs office but he did ask me what my goal was.  I set mine at 130lbs.  If I get to 140 I'll be extremely happy!  But 140 is at the high end of normal for me.  I'm 5'4 and rather small boned.  My surgeon thinks 130 is a good do-able goal for me.
