Exercise Question- I love your opinions!!!
Vicki, I'm confused about the fact that you're afraid you'll build muscle. That's just what you want to do. Why do men lose weight so much more easily than women? Because they have a lot more muscle and muscle burns more calories than fat. Muscle takes up less room than fat and muscle is what allows you to do little things like walk, run, pick up a briefcase or a child or throw a ball or toss a bag of trash into the container. Unless you start taking steroids, you don't need to worry about looking like a body builder or gaining serious poundage. You'll just look better, feel better and do everything more easily. Why do many elderly people get progressively more crippled and fall down? Because they stopping exercising and start losing lots and lots of muscle. Muscle is your friend. Embrace it.
Here's my rough schedule:
M: running intervals either outside or on treadmill (30 mins)
T: plyometrics/core metabolic workout (mix of medicine ball, bands, aerobic whole body movements) (45 mins)
W: increasing incline hills on treadmill (30-45 mins)
Th: free weights (45 mins)
F: low, long intervals on elliptical (30-45 mins)
Sa: plyometrics (45 mins)
Su: long low-level workout (1.5 hrs, walking, hiking, biking, swimming, whatever)
I'll keep doing that for a couple months and probably mix it up again once it's spring and I can do more outside.

Have you ever tried a spinning class? They are INSANE and will burn TONS of calories. Over the summer when I was really hitting the gym, I had a trainer and he was also a spinning instructor. I started out doing 30 mins elliptical and 30 mins on the treadmill on about a 4 incline. Just a thought...
