Fatty Liver

Im just full of questions here this week...
My Dr didnt put me on any kind of pre-op diet (funny, he said I wasnt that "big" that I needed to do the diet) I beg to differ! LOL
Anyway, after reading all about the whole fatty liver thing...is there a chance that when my dr begins the surgery, I will have too much fat and they wont be able to complete the surgery? I am very apple shaped...more like a barrell on stilts! LOL Ive been trying to lose the weight I actually lost about 4 lbs but Im having some emotional issues right now and Im thinking one of my meds (celexa) may not be helping much.

Just looking for your thoughts. I would like to lose weight before surgery...the more I can lose before, the less I have to lose after.

I am surprised he didn't put you on some sort of diet.  I generally say go with what your doctor says.  That's what you pay him for.  I think I would probably try to do a little limiting on my own though.  I don't really remember what my diet was but I think it was something like 70 g protein, < 30 g carbs <30 g fat.  Something like that, again I don't really remember.

Mary,

I had to do a 4-week pre-op Liver Shrinkage diet (which I followed to the letter).  Later, my surgeon said I had a fatty liver, but he was still able to do my band surgery without problems.

Anything you can do to lose weight before surgery would be to your advantage.

Do you think the Celexa is making you gain weight?  Maybe you could try a different anti-depressant?

I was to have surgery on the 16th, but I have backed it up to Feb 27th. My doctor wanted me on a one-week pre-op diet and was adamant that if I did not follow it, he would not do the surgery. I am 5'6 and 220 lbs ( I have lost 11 lbs since beginning the pre-op diet). He reminded me that I am to do the pre-op diet again starting a week before my surgery in February. I am pretty much doing it now anyway, as I want to get used to the way I will be eating post-band anyway.

I would say that it is probably a good idea to do a pre-op diet one to two weeks beforehand, if for no other reason, to get accustomed to the protein drinks, liquid-only diet that we will face in the weeks following surgery.

It can't hurt.

I'm surprised your Dr make you do the diet.  I had it pretty easy, my DR had me do low carbs and low fat for 2 weeks before surgery.  I lost 12 lbs and didn't have any problems with my surgery.  I think any weight you lose before surgery will help!  Good luck!

Thank you all for your advice. I had started a low carb 'diet' two-three weeks ago. That is something that has worked GREAT for me before. I fell off the wagon last weekend after a family issue and am having a hard time getting back on. I figured I would be mostly low carb post band anyway. I will do this. I just gotta pull myself out of this hole Im in right now.

I was taking lexapro, and changed to celexa. I had lost weight taking it in the past, but that was years ago. I just started again in October and gained 20-25lbs in about a month and a half. last time I took it, I lost 40lbs in 4 month low carbing it.

I did 3 protein shakes and two sugar free fat free fudgsicles a day for 13 days preceeding my surgery (the doctor, based on my weight, required 10).  I lost 12 pounds and post-surgery, my surgeon told me I had a very healthy and small liver.  I would think that an apple-shaped person is more likely to have a fatty liver, than not., as you have more fat in the region where you liver is.
The good thing about doing the diet is that, in addition to shrinking my liver, I had less weight to lose post surgery.
Here's what a fatty liver looks like (it can lead to cihrrosis of the liver):
