Any of you ever have one of those new bathtub replacement thingies done?  you know the one that fits right of the old one and it is done in only one day....  I hate mine and whenever I try to put on new caulking around it I end up making such a mess, looks like a 5 year old did it. if you know anything, how does it look and how much did it cost??

I have never had it done, but I have seen them and they look great.   I have a friend in southern Maine who is a salesman for Bathfitter.  I know they are pricey, I think ( but am not sure) that they are between 3-5 thousand. I hope this helps Bethany

Cheryl- Before you caulk take out all the old caulking.  The surface should be clean and dry before putting your new calking down.  Using a calking gun takes practice...you can purchase bathroom calking in a squeeze tube...it's easier but more expensive (less expensive than a new tub).  Use a plastic spoon or your finger to smooth the caulking.  They even make a tool for smoothing caulking if you prefer.  Most importantly let it dry, dry, and dry some more.  It's recommended you not use the tub or shower for 1 - 2 days. I used to put on seminars showing how to do it.  Practice using caulk and smoothing it.  That's what I did.  I was asked to do a seminar and I had never done it before.  I called my dad and he explained how to do it and then I practiced caulking the inside of a cardboard box.

Cheryl, i used to live in Ellsworth and had my tub redone through bathfitter.  I had a nasty pink bath with yucky pink tile and gross grout.  The installer came in, replaced the shower head and copper pipe, which might not be necessary in your case, and then put he tub piece in, followed by the surround.  It took less than 8 hours and cost about $1900.  Keep in mind I had to replace the shower head and spout and if I recall correctly that was the pricey part.  The installer cleaned up the mess, cleaned the shower and left instructions on how to clean, and it comes with a lifetime warranty as long as you don't damage by cleaning it with the wrong stuff....Long story short, I loved it and was VERY satisfied with how it looked.  If fact when we sold that house the buyers stated how nice the bathroom was.  I'm not sure exactly where they go for installs, but they do free estimates and you can choose what you do and  do not want for styles and so on depending on cost.  It was a great option for us.  we are not handy and didn't want to have to demo and then start from scratch.  I think i may stil have pics if you'd like me to email.  Let Me know.
