The advice I was given was to make sure I had frequent snacks and to be sure they included some type of protein.  Also, I was told to stay away from those "bad" carbs as they cause a spike in your blood sugar and then, by the time the insulin reaches your gut, the food is gone and it makes your blood sugar drop.  I've been doing better since adding a protein snack in the evening.

I use the One Touch Ultra Mini glucose meter because I got it for free online.  My test strips are covered by my insurance because my doctor wanted me to check my blood sugars to see what they were doing.  You should probably bring your meter in to the pharmacy with you so the pharmacy tech can help you choose the right strips for your meter.
Good luck!  Low blood sugars really stink, but it can be managed.

I am also hypoglycemic. It sucks when it happens. Feels like it takes all day to get back to normal. I make sure to keep protein snacks with me and avoid high sugar carbs. Cheese sticks are good, protein bars, etc. Try to eat every 2 hours. I find that helps too. Good luck. I also have protein before I work out. It keeps me from getting weak and dizzy.

Test strips are way expensive.  I would suggest checking with the Pharmist for the cheapest ones covered by your insrance then ask your PCP to give you a RX for them.  I got an RX for a meter I found cheap at the pharmacy and ended up still paying big bucks for the strips because I asked my PCP for that  particular brand.  (Ended up being 50 cents per test strip)
