Topic: RE: Dr. Baker vs Dr. Ikramuddin
Well, I think I need to start going to these information seminars and meeting the docs/teams.  I still have a lot of emotions and concerns regarding both DS and VSG procedures (RNY is officially out of my running):

DS:
- Seems drastic; they bypasss 5 feet of intestines.  Lots of potential complications.  I watched a video of a laproscopic DS and it kinda grossed me out.
- Taking so many vitamins; 15-20 @ $150/mo for the rest of my life.  I know it's stupid, but if I was shipwrecked or something and had no access to vitamins...I would die!  What about when I'm really old and in a nursing home...I'll be taking 30 pills a day (although without the surgery I likely wouldn't make it to a nursing home).
- More frequent/smelly bowel movements.
- Would loose too much weight?  I don't care about getting skinny, I just want to be healthy so that I can watch my daughter grow up.

VSG:
- No insurance coverege (I'm kinda doubting an appeal would work).
- Results not as "garunteed" long term; I may strech my pouch and regain the weight.
- Long term effects not well understood; not many years of data.
- Surgeon/staff may not have much experience with this proceedure; less helpful care/support.

Both:
- I'll have all this excess skin that is both astetically and functionally a burden.
- I've never had ANY surgery before; it kinda scares me.
- I'll have 6-8 laproscopic scars.
- Admitting to friends/family that I couldn't do it on my own.  My mom lost her weight the "old fashioned" way.
- Worried that it will change my personality.  When my mom lost her weight, she become somewhat self absorbed (much unlike how she used to be).

Sorry to vent my fears, but I'm sure you guys may have had some of the same ones.  Hopefully these information seminars will answer some of these questions and give me confidence  that this lifestyle would be right for me.

I have heard a lot of wonderful things about Dr. Ikramuddin, and he has a great track record so far.

If you're right on the line for BMI, you may be able to appeal the >50 BMI requirement if they deny you on those grounds.

Topic: Another Monday rolls around--keeping it honest!
I guess I didn't take my own advice, and it is showing.  I'm up again this Monday.

Had a rough week with exercise, and didn't change my eating to compensate for it.  I was home sick from work on Tuesday, still funky on Wednesday, and then just slothful on Friday and Saturday.  So workouts only on Sunday, Monday and Thursday--whoops.   I finally got back to running on Sunday, so I felt better about that, but 4 miles kicked my butt.  Time to get back on track.

Starting weight: 298.4 lbs
Last week: 139.9 lbs
This week: 141.1
Gain of 1.2 lbs

140 is my freak-out number--I've been flirting with it the last few weeks, but now I had to report a Monday number OVER 140, so it's time!!  Time to plant my foot directly up my own butt (which is awkward, BTW) and get myself moving!

You'll be just fine.  I had my sleeve in May and have lost over 100 lbs.  My best advice is follow your doctors orders and speak up for yourself, or have someone around who will speak up for you.  I needed a med change for pain in the hospital (it just wasn't cutting it) and I practically had to beg for it.  If something isn't right, speak up until you're heard because they can fix just about anything!  If you're miserable, you can't walk the halls, and you've gotta move.  :)  Good luck with it all- this summer it'll be a distant memory and you'll be close to goal!!!

Welcome and please know there are lots of veterans here to help you -!

Nerves are common and you are normal!  You will be just fine, I promise!  I was a wreck before surgery (I went to Mexico) but fast forward a few months and you will be seeing amazing results and look back an laugh about how nervous you where.  You are only human, so of course you will be scared.

VSG is a bit newer here in MN so you will find most weighloss patients did around here didnt have VSG, but its becoming more common!  I am 11 months out - my anniversary is Jan 6th.  I made goal in less than 10 months.

Take it one day at a time.  Do not rush to the next stages of diet after surgery.  Your body will tell you when you are ready for the next step.  I had a relatively easy journey.  Oh yes there were bumps on the way (threw up 3 times so far after eating to much or drinking with meals).  I am having my gallbladder out in about 3.5 hours - actually need to get packing but wanted to check the boards to see what I missed over the weekend!

Sending you best wishes and prayers this week!  The OH boards will be a great resource for you on your journey - I know they have been and still are for me!  Good luck!

Topic: RE: Don't be afraid of the Big Bad Doc
What a great reminder Darla! I went back to my dr for my 10 post op appointment this summer and was so glad that I did. My Dr has new suggestion for the daily suppliments that I would not have ever known about. I have strongly suggested to my family members < my mom and 2 brothers also had my same surgeon> to make follow up appointments to make sure they are up to date with everything they need to know!

Topic: RE: Starting to Re-build Me
I am surprized at all who said they were too old for reconstructive surgery. The Dr I went too have plenty of patients in their 50's and 60's.
I had the lbl, breast lift with implants and 5 zone of lypo for contouring my dr also added some of the lypo fat back to my butt to round it out. I never thought I'd get more then the lbl but now it is like once you replace the new sofa and curtains the rug looks as though it could be redone too, I will mostlikely go back < I had my work all done in Brazil> and do some tweeking and go for the thigh lift in a couple of years. I am 10 year out of RNY and 5 year out of plastic so I guess I am not in any rush.
