Do you still do Protein Shakes?
Yes - I drink the protein shakes daily. I had not been, and started feeling yuck. I had waffled back and forth over do we need them, can we even digest the protein from food - where did/does protein get digested and do we still have that function in our new digestive system. Apparently we do not - at least not entirely and not reliably enough without protein shake supplementation to rely solely on food as our source of protein. I believe I did as well as I did, because I was eating protein bars every day; but they aren't quite the same as the shakes.
Here's is a thread on a publicly visible message forum where it goes into great detail explaining all this - yet not too techinical to loose ya. LOL Also, a couple replies down, a medical doctor replies and agrees with the synopsis. I also took this same thread to my own doctor and we discussed it and he also agrees, because of our old stomach being bypassed, and the first portion of the small intestine, where proteins are normally broken down and digested AND then add in our mal-aborption issues, we need the predigested whey protein shakes! It's really a matter of simple biology.
HI Sharlene!
Since Dr. Richardson moved to Wentzville, I have my family doctor (Dr. Lamble in Cuba) do my labs and such for me now. Dr. Lamble has been awesome at wanting to become educated on WLS and has a few patients now who have had WLS (even one of his staff members) - so he feels the need to learn more to help keep them healthy. Dr. Lamble has offered to be the supervising physician (or whatever the appropriate term is) if I would start a WLS support group out this way. I may do that. There is a definite need.
