Protein first week out

In my booklet from the doctor for RNY surgery, it gives a schedule of when to introduce what foods/proteins. I took the suggestions from the first week of "protein optional" ****il one week checkup) to heart and have not done any protein this week. Has anyone else done the same or has everyone added protein soon after surgery? Just curious, I am feeling fine with no protein, but of course calorie count is very low so there is my concern. Dang it, it SAID optional! LOL

P.S. I'm getting all my vitamins in.

I didn't worry about protein the first week. Just work on your liquids and vitamins.

you dont have to start protein the first week if you dont want to...it is more important that you work on getting all your water in and all your vits. in ...but if you want to start adding protein since you are on clear liquids yet , you can get some ready made Isopure...GNC sells it , it is a little expensive but is great for clear liquid diets. .....you are doing great and your first appointment will be here soon. i thought that all of Dr. Delatoras patients they gave you the isopure in the hospital.......
just curious do you happen to be Riannes friend? was just wondering. ......you are doing wonderful to be getting in all your vits.  way to go girl....

The only thing I had in the hospital was sf jello, broth, tea, and diluted fruit juice. No protein there either. I sent my dad's girlfriend after some Isopure today so I will be able to try it.

The vitamins seem like a meal to me because I picked the Building Blocks chewable, those are monstrous, lol!

Thanks for the encouragement Jan!!

No, I don't know Rianne.

My doctor had me on protein drinks the first week.  I did a couple a day but it took a long time to drink them.  All doctors are different so just do what you were told.

Good luck!

I am worried about starting protein because on the pre-surgery diet I guzzled it down quickly, thinking I didn't want to get sick on protein. Now post-surgery I am going to have to sip and am afraid it won't be easy...ordered Nectar this week so hopefully that will be easier to sip. Thanks!!

When I first learned I would using protein supplements for the rest of my life, I thought YUK, how can I do that.  My previous experience with protein drinks were they tasted just awful.  That's not the case for me.  I have several I really like.  I won't tell you they taste like a Sonic shake but they taste pretty good and I don't mind them.

I bought individual packs from Unjury and a couple other websites (can't remember who now) so that gave me a chance to try different flavors.  Some were good and some were just awful.  BariactricEating.com has some great products.  I really like the Inspire Cinnamon Cappucino and I've ordered the Peanut Butter.  Like Syntha 6 too and GNC has that.  GNC will take back anything you don't like so if you try a flavor and don't like it, return for an exchange or refund.  I really like GNC's brand of Chocolate Carmel.  It sells in a small bag for about $14.

Hope this helps.

The first week I lived on diluted apple juice, so much that I can't even drink it now.  I bought Isopure too, its not that great but if you can get it down go for it.  I wish you lived closer I have a ton of it in my cabinet that I never drank.  Its optional, we have the same Dr. and Abbie the NUT says the first week your healing and its not a big deal at all, you'll have plenty of weeks where it is a big deal so enjoy this week not having to worry about it. ;) Lou
