Topic: RE: WHATS HAPPENING WEDNESDAY
Hi, Mama Jan & MO Peeps!

I've not felt well this past week.  It seems to come and go.  Thankfully, Jake went grocery shopping with me Monday.  We bought about $350 worth of groceries, had two carts full.  I was so thankful that Jake was with me.  I just can't push those heavy carts anymore.   Then Tuesday I went out and found a nice pair of jeans at dress-barn and a few other items I needed.  We are having Family Pictures taken at JC Penny's this Friday.  All FOUR kids will be here.  We haven't had an entire family picture taken in over 10 years.  Erin, my step daughter, wanted her and I to wear black...she's gained some weight and black will make us both look slimmer!  We decided that we'd all wear dark rinse blue jeans and the guys will wear a Royal Burgundy Long Sleeve Polo. I got a great deal on the polo's from JC Penny's and bought their St. John Bay jeans there too.   Erin and I went shopping last week.  I bought her a pair of "Skinny Jeans". They were a present for her Birthday.  She wanted me to buy a pair too. I tried them on and I really did not like them.  I still have chunky thighs, so they don't work on me. I found a really cute black sweater with a fur collar and a skinny belt at dress barn.  I also bought the jeans at dress barn, they are dark rinse blue jeans with flowers and rhinestones.  The rhinestones are black along the sides of the jeans. It's a really nice outfit.  I like the sweater because I can dress it up or down.
My hair dresser is out of town so I have an apt with a lady here in town that did my hair years ago.  I figure it'd be easier to have my hair done Friday then come home and put my make up on.  Having the hair done for me is over half the battle! All the boys have had haircuts.  Except my stepson, Josh.  He is actually growing his hair out long.  He's grows it so many inches and then donates it to Locks of Love.  He's done in a few times.  He usually keeps it all covered up under a baseball hat.  I'm wondering what he's planning on for the pictures.  I guess time will tell.  I think it's great that he does it, just wish he'd cut it before the pics.  I really wish my hair would be thick and would grow long enough to donate it.  Locks of Love uses donated hair to make wigs for children who have cancer.  His grandma, my husband's mother, died from cancer so I think that is why he does it...in honor of her.  It is really is a neat thing he does for children he'll probably never meet.

As always, we're having Thanksgiving Dinner at our house.  To be honest, I'll be glad when my future daughter-in-laws will be cooking the dinner.  However, that will be years from now.  I've been doing it for 20 years and I'm tired.  Thankfully, DH has always helped me.  My boys usually do the dishes.  It's only been the last year or so that my 27 year old step daughter has actually helped with the clean up.  I think her Dad said something to hear a year or so ago.  It's a lot of work cooking for 9 to 11 people every year.  This will be our second year deep frying the turkey.  We bought  Master-Built indoor deep fryer last year.  This year we're frying 3 turkeys.  Two that we injected with different marinades...one is store bought...Roasted Garlic and Herb, one is home made called Butter & Beer and the the third one is a spicy rub from the food network website.  Our fryer will only hold a 14 lb turkey.  The turkey's at Price Chopper were either 20+ lbs or 11 lbs.  My DH didn't think two turkeys would enough, so that is why we frying three turkeys.  He will still frying around 9am.  Tonight I made the candied yams, coleslaw, turkey gravy and made the turkey stock that I will use in the dressing for tomorrow.  Tomorrow the boys will help me peel 10 lbs of potatoes for the mashed potatoes.  I'll slow cook about 8 cans of french cut green  beans and warm the rest of the dishes up.  I don't bake pies, but I did buy 3 -  Blackberry, Pumpkin and French Silk.  We eat between 12:00 and 12:30.  Then we clean up and take a nap or watch TV.  Later we play board games with the kids.  The older kids will have to leave early to go to their Mom's house.

Friday after the pictures, I'm hoping we can all go bowling.  I was able to purchase $60 of  bowling and food for $30 at a local bowling alley on Munchron.com.  It was too good of a deal to pass up.  I thought it'd be a fun family activity.  We used to go bowling a lot when the kids where younger, haven't done it in a long time.  My step children's great grandma just passed away today so they might not want to go bowling on Friday.  We'll discuss it tomorrow.

Mama Jan - sorry you're working on Thanksgiving!  But that double pay will be GREAT!  Are you all still planning on going to Arizona for the winter?  David and I were hoping to spend a few days in Texas this winter but it doesn't look like it's going to happen.  His job will be ending in a month or so.  Please keep us in your prayers.  We have to keep trusting the Lord to provide.  It' hard but I am believe that God Is Good All The Time, All The Time God Is Good!

Jeanie - Congrats on starting school!  I've enjoyed "watching" your transformation on the board.  I know the Lord has great things planned for you!  Please be sure to call me the next time you come thru KC, would love to meet you in person!

MO Peeps - Hope each and everyone of you have a Happy Thanksgiving!  Remember to Count Your Blessings and Give Thanks to our Wonderful God!

Love all of you!

Good Afternoon Before Turkey Day~ It's about to get crazy around here so want to wish all of my OH Friends a very Happy Thanksgiving.

I am most thankful that we have an all POWERFUL GOD, and that he is Loving and always forgiving, and most importan that he sent HIS ONLY SON to earth as a Ransom for our sin. The second things I am thankful for are my Children, my Friends and my health.

I don't know if I posted but I start school next Monday and am so excited I have trouble concentrating on the things at hand. I keep daydreaming what it's going to be like out there.

Love you all, and wish you a very HAPPY AND FULFILLING THANKS-GIVING.

Good morning , the day before Turkey day and i have to work and will work again tomorrow....will get paid double for Thanksgiving so thought why not might as well  Joe and I can have Thanksgiving any time lol
Speaking of which, WHAT ARE YOU THE MOST THANKFUL FOR THIS THANKSGIVING>

mine would be that im a Christian and that I have the feedom to be that even tho it might come to pass sooner than we think that we wont have that freedom....after that is my family and reasonable good health. to be able to enjoy it all.

Lana I dont think you opened a can of worms...i think the most of us that have had surgery agree. it is like is said they operate on our stomachs not our heads but if you arent willing to GIVE UP  the way you eat before surgery then it is a waste of time.....I hear about these people that have the surgery and lose lots of weight and then start parting , drinking and eating like they are normal , well we arent normal , we have to totally change the way we eat or we will be just back to the same thing again.

well got to go get ready for work...talk to you all to morrow.    have a wonderful Thanksgiving and remember to eat PROTEIN FIRST ......

Topic: RE: Question
Jeanie Rae your post reminds me of another very important part of WLS that is often overlooked. After surgery care is just as important as the surgery itself. So please be mindful to ask what after care the bariatric practice offers BEFORE you select your surgeon. There will be a million questions afterwards that you will need answers to and reassurances. And if your surgeon does not offer a structured after care program as in support group meetings, followup Psych appointments and medical staff to answer your questions then success is far more difficult than if they do. I know we have a couple of practices here in the KC Metro area that think spending their money on TV advertising is more important than offering good after care.... in my opinion they could not be more wrong. That tells me they are in it for the money and not the right reasons.
Just another thought I wanted to share with those in the beginning of their journey,
Connie
PS; Jeanie Rae you have done such a wonderful job I hope you know how proud we all are of you!

Just want to say I totally agree with Lana, Connie and SusyA. I have lost 123 pounds since I started my journey back in March, and it isn't as easy as some people think. Even though I follow the rules there are still times when the old habits come back and I have to remember why I chose to have the RNY. So all of you out there that are just starting your journey make sure you learn all you can about what you are about to do. This is a life changing event, but it would be so easy to lose sight of the goal and get back into the food. So you need to talk to as many people as you can and realize it isn't a fix, all the surgeries are a tool and if you don't use it right it can break.

Vickie~ I had RNY on May 3 of this year, my daughter's MIL had the lap band about 3 weeks before that. I went through steps before surgery and had to do the diets and learning all the rules before surgery. My daughter's MIL went to her 1st appointment, and about 2 weeks later was scheduled for her surgery. She only had to do liquid before surgery and didn't have to do any kind of psych evaluations or classes or anything like that. She has only lost 4 or 5 pounds and swears she is following the rules, but then when I asked if she was getting her proteins, and vitamins and such she says she just can't stand them. Her sons wife had lapband at the same place, was approve very quickly because of her insurance, and the same situation as the other. They thought this was a quick fix and it's not working for them. They have both seen me several times since surgery and I think the are getting that the tool they were given requires them to work for the weight loss.

My advice to you is to make sure which surgery you want. Once you have a surgery it is sometimes harder to get a revision. I took two years to make up my mind and when I did it was the right choice for me. Which ever one you choose you have to do your part or it won't work.

I think the DR.s doing quick surgeries should be investigated.

Hi Lana, this is the first time i've been on in a very long time, and this is the first post to pop out at me.Great job you said everything perfectly, I think that the forced waiting, diets, evaluations etc etc, are all part of the big picture, if it were possible to decide to have it done one day, and have surgery the next ...can you imagine what would happen?! oh my , the horror of it, there is a reason for everything, the doctors (the GOOD ones) arent just trying to make a quick buck, they want you to be successful and all the pre op stuff is essential and for a reason, if you do not have the patience, money, time and whatever other reason (excuse) you can think of, then maybe wls is not for you, Trust us all who have been through it already, IT IS NOT A QUICK FIX!!! would I do it all again?  YES ! in a hot minute, everytime I get discouraged , fall of the damn sugar wagon, I look at a before picture at 400 lb.s, and remember how miserable  I was. But there are times when I am sick to death of the never ending vitamins, the protein, the foods i want to scarf..but can't (thank God..i mean that literally) and it's all worth it. Patience is not only a virtue, but for those contemplating wls it is a MUST . think of the future, 6 mo's seems like forever to wait, but forever feeling better about yourself is priceless!

Lana I applaud you for saying this so well!! And if you don't mind I would like to add my 2 cents too.
I hear way too often 'oh I will get the Lap Band so if I don't really like it I'll just have them take it out'. Folks this isn't some new pair of shoes you can return if they aren't comfortable!! But the one that just drives up the wall is 'I gotta have this surgery before the first of the year or not at all cause I have met my deductible'. I understand the financial aspect but this is not something you should do just to 'beat the bank' on your deductible for goodness sakes. Often times they don't even know how to pronounce the names of the surgery little lone understand the dynamics of post-op life.
Not to point any fingers just trying to help anyone that is reading this thinking about having WLS. Please please read Lana's post again and do your own research and education. It is no one's responsibility other than you. And if you want to be successful it requires work and dedication before and after surgery.
DON'T BE PART OF THE HORROR STORIES BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANT TO BOTHER DOING THE WORK!
You will be even more proud of your success than you are impatient trust us!!!

I am going through the New Start program and my insurance (Aetna) requires a three month Doctor supervised diet. My father in law went through New Start with Medicare and did not have to do one.
Depends on Insurance.

I'm going to make some folks mad now but the longer I am on this site and the more I meet folks having surgery the more convinced I become that way too many people are like the tail wagging the dog. They want their surgery NOW and don't want to take time to learn what is happening and to really understand what they are getting in to. So they want to go to the doctor who will not make them wait and have psych visits or nutrition visits or exercise visits and learn to log what they eat and learn what vitamins they need to take for life and learn the importance of drinking water and eating protein and learn, learn, learn.

This should not be looked at as a QUICK fix. We may have been thinking about having the surgery for years but until we have serious time in groups and on this site and meet with experts we are NOT ready to have surgery. The people who rush into this are the ones who have regrets and less success.

Take deep breaths. Learn patience. Practice the rules you'll be following for the REST OF YOUR LIFE. This isn't something that you do for six or twelve months, lose the weight and then go back to life the way it was. This is FOREVER!

We are never the same. And we shouldn't want or expect to be. The way we were is FAT and unhealthy and when we finally realize that no food is worth the price we have paid in the past to have things our own way - then we are ready to have the surgery.

Six months is not a long time to wait. It may not even be long enough.

Everyone - slow down and realize what you are doing. It's not all lollypops and roses out here. It's hard work - way harder than being fat. We give up our comfortable best friend - foods and we have to find the reason we overate in the first place and figure out how we are going to deal with that after surgery. Then, maybe, we're ready to proceed.

I love you all and want only success for each of you but I want you to be informed and ready before you change your life forever.

Hugs and tough love,

Lana
