Oh definitely I am still on the prescribed diet plan, but I think I may add the metformin.  I am not full blown diabetic YET.  I didn't even know I was insulin resistant until 1 week ago!  Only problem with metformin is it's hard on your stomach!

I had IR before becoming full blown diabetic and was put on one  to two Imodium a day for the stomach issues. It does work! You can use the generic version from Walmart or Sams sells a big deal of them. Good luck... Sherry

See, that's the kicker...I'm on Metformin.  I don't know if I should call my internal medicine doctor and talk with him about what is going on.  Maybe my dose needs to be upped?  I am currenty on a super low-carb, high-protein diet which I put together after I did some research on IR on the internet.  It's just confusing but I guess I will wait until I talk with the nutritionist before I get too discouraged.  I guess I'm just so excited about having the surgery that I'm getting impatient!!!  UUUGGGHHHH!!!!

Thanks for all of the advice!

I will say that I was so disapointed that I had to go back on Metformin 3 months after my RNY.  After 3 months of no meds... he tested my fasting level and it came back at 106.  YIKES!  Now that I'm back on Metforin it's down to an 8.  I really hoped that I would never have to take it again.

I have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and insulin resistance is part od this diagnosis.  What you might want to do is check out a book about the glycemic index and choose foods from the low end.  Basically, this means the less processed food is, the more likely it will be allowed on the diet and you should lose weight.  It works for a lot of people.  donna

I have PCOS and have been diagnosed with insulin resistance. Last month I had my fasting insulin level checked and it was 10. Which it was never that low with Metformin or Avandia. I am not on anything now. The book they maybe talking about I belive is called the insulin resistant diet.

Sorry I'm late getting back to you.  There's another book called Syndrome X.  It's been out awhile so it may be at the library.  donna
