I am having a scope done tomorrow at TWH, and am not looking forward to it! I have such a bad gag reflex..I can barely brush my teeth!
Has anyone else had this done? Do they put you out enough?
They said I will get a sedative but that better mean "out cold"
I thought I would never say this but this is one time I would rather have the scope from the other end!! ewww

I was knocked out cold, and I have had it also awake and to tell you the truth I didnt feel a thing and was very relaxed, I have a horrible gag reflex. Try not to worry to much I know it is hard but I think they always knock you out these days....

I was scared to death to have an Endoscopy a few weeks ago. I too am a gagger. They had me gargle with a numbing solution and then sprayed my throat. Then they have me the sedative to relax me. I have no recollection of the test and it was a breeze.

You will be sedated you wont even know or feel nothing so no worries :) In Hamilton they use a spray to numb the throat as well, that was not the best tasting and it feels like a fur ball stuck in there But other then that it's very smooth sailing. Good Luck

I was nervous about the scope too but it was an absolute breeze.  I had mine done in Hamilton but I don't remember getting anything to numb my throat.  I was more worried about the meds to knock me out because I tend to vomit a lot after anasthesia but they told me they are using something new that doesn't cause this (can't remember the name).  They were right, I had no probs at all.  I had it done about 6 weeks ago.

Had mine done a couple of weeks ago at St. Joes in Hamilton and it is no problem. I didn't even mind the spray that they used to numb my throat. It is a little weird because right after they spray the throat it feels like you can't swallow (which you can't) and it is a bit odd. Just ask to sit up or if they can put your head up, usually they get started a couple of minutes after that so it isn't a big deal. You'll be right out and waking up in recovery before you know it.

So it seems Ontario tackles the endoscopy procedure better.

I can vividly remember the one I had in Cleveland, and while I was sedated and they did spray my throat, I was very much alert for the procedure and it seemed to take forever.  Not sure which was worse, the procedure or the sore throat I had for a few days afterwards.

I was also unfortunate to have to be intubated before being knocked out during the surgical prep.

In the end it was a small price to pay for the outcome it helped to provide.
