the story so far...
HI folks.
I want to share some good news.
When my wife started her process, I went to all her meetings and decided that I would also have the surgery and began preparing for the change in lifestyle. She had her RNY in March and mine was in August. I started 2012 at 396 pounnds. From January to July, I lost 40 pounds on my own. From July 22 to August 13, I lost another 30 on optifast. Since surgery 5 weeks ago, I have lost another 42 pounds. All in all, I have lost 102 pounds.
I am halfway to my goal weight of 185 (I am five foot eight with a 50" chest - bit of a barrel)! And I am only 5 weeks out!
But I had a stricture. ANY solid food and medication caused significant pain and often would not go down at all. I vomited regularly. I thought this problem might go away as I healed - it didn't. I waited a long time before I went down to HRRH and got it fixed and now my energy is very low and my fatigue is high. But after the stricture repair, I was significantly better and getting better every day again.
My shirt size has gone from a 5XL to a 3XL and my pant size from a 50 to 42. I can now buy pants at regular men's stores! What a fantastic feeling!
Thanks everyone for the support and advice. This is a really great forum. Sorry for the long post.

It's so great to see an update from you! I too had a stricture - they don't fix themselves on their own, unfortunately. Glad you had that taken care of and you and your wife are doing well. :)

Love to hear husband/wife success stories :) My DH is scheduled for Oct 30th for his surgery !
Congrats on your weight loss. 100 pounds already ! That's fantastic.
Sorry about your stricture. i guess it's a lesson for all of us. If it hurts, something is probably not right !
keep up the good work :)
