I have been told to take proefferin. Anybody else take this ,if so how do you feel. Also anyone take the herbal supplement florasil? I have heard this is gentler and was wondering if still effective enough to take instead of the proefferin.

Have you asked for a referral to a hematologist to discuss iron injections or infusions? You should not have to live with chronic anemia.
I had OHIP approved Duodenal Switch surgery with Dr. Dennis Hong at St. Joseph's Hamilton on March 7th, 2012. Want more information on the DS in Ontario? Send me a private message!

thanks so much

yes I have been to a specialist and we have discussed infusion.

..I am having a hysterectomy  soon due to a fibroid which may in fact be causing these problems.  The Internal Specialist said after this gets dealt with he will re-evaluate and see if infusion is necessary.  I should count myself fortunate as apparently I don;t have the "typical" symptons that anemics have..only thing I have is that tiredness that comes on in late afternoon.

This is called Floradix.. It can be found in health food stores and I can almost guarantee you your iron will be up within a week. As opposed to the other iron supplements that take up to 3 weeks. I too had fibroids which caused me to become anemic

I think it is really insane to have to go to such lengths like an iron infusion when there are other ways to get your iron levels up but because the "western doc" doesn't know about them or won't prescribe it,.... argh

I took Floradix as my prenate when I was pregnant with my son.. I also took it post partum as I was anemic. Within a week of taking it I felt normal again. Yes it really does work that fast and it won't harm you.

You don't need a script for this.. it's natural and it's healthy

and it works.. check out the endorsements of the other ladies who have taken it...

Some of us just don't absorb well unfortunately :(  I myself went through a cycle of 10 iron infusions to get my iron and especially my hemoglobin up to an acceptable level so that I could have surgery in August (which never happened LOL).  Anyway, I'm going to give it a try!  Thanks for the tip.

Proferrin is a heme iron and is very easily absorbed by post-ops. Other good types of iron for post-ops are polysaccharide iron (FeraMAX, Cypress) and carbonyl iron (most bariatric iron supplements). The dose you need depends on how low you are and what type you choose. Is your doc knowledgable about anemia? If not, you may want to request a referral to a hematologist if you have trouble getting your numbers up with oral iron. Many post-ops, especially RNYers, will need iron injections or infusions to correct a deficiency. It is very, very important to supplement iron immediately after surgery to avoid anemia, but even then, many still end up with deficiencies.

I'm 15 months post op and this is the first time I have labs saying I am a little deficient.
My surgeon has never told me to take iron so I never have.
I am worried it will bung me up. As for injections, I have heard they hurt like hell. :(
The florasil is awesome but not sure how potent as \I took it nursing and it is recommended to take it prior to monthly periods. Its a liquid and easy on the tummy and minimal side effects for constipation.
