If you number is between 3-4 I would consider having something to eat or drink. That is an extremely simplified answer.

Under 4. But a lot of people don't feel it until it's under that. At 4.6 I feel fine, but am unable to exercise at that level, or below (doctor's orders). i have to bring them up first.

Surgery March 23/2011. Completed three full marathons and two half marathons, two half Ironman distances. Completed my first Full Ironman distance (4 km swim, 180 km bike, 42.2 km (full marathon) run) in Muskoka August 30/2015. Next Ironman Lake Placid July 23/2017!

4-8 is normal.
Anything under 4 is low. It could mean that you aren't eating regularly enough. Low blood sugar and our tummy growling often indicate to our bodies that we need food. Now that many of us don't get the hunger pangs that we did sometimes we aren't in tune to know when we need to eat.

It goes high when you eat and generally within 2 hours it should be back to a normal range.

I've been as low as 1.1 without going unconscious. Anything under 3 is starting to get into scary zone for me.

Wow!! My lowest was 1.8 and I was on the floor! Well, the road during a work event.
I also should have said that if I'm at 4.6 or below I can't exercise because I drop fast within 15 minutes of cardio. I would treat myself at 3.4 or less, if needed. I start feeling wonky at that level and it usually goes downhill fast. Luckily I haven't had a low in awhile

Usually under 4, but if you have levels that are usually high, you might feel it at 4 or 5.

Did you have diabetes or hypoglycaemia before you had surgery? People without these conditions should not see their blood sugar go outside of a pretty small normal range of 4-8, even after a big meal or after missing a meal your body can regulate to keep it normal. If your blood sugar is going above or below this you need to monitor it very carefully and eat accordingly, especially by avoiding simple carbs. 79% of RNYers have some sort of blood sugar abnormality following surgery, so keep a close eye on this.

I had OHIP approved Duodenal Switch surgery with Dr. Dennis Hong at St. Joseph's Hamilton on March 7th, 2012. Want more information on the DS in Ontario? Send me a private message!
