When Did You Know?
The other day(few weeks ago) my son who is 8 randomly busted out crying and worrying and voicing his concern that I wasn't going to be there for him(as in die). And that action and subsequent upset is what led me to run head first to the Dr and get my referral done and sent in.
So I'm wondering, what it was that let you know that your time to consider this surgery and take charge of things?

When my father fell, and I couldn't pick him up.
I was once a strong person, growing up with seven brothers/cousins/friends will do that to a girl...
I felt weak and unable to help...I want to be able to take care of my father, And any other family members who need it.

I've got to be close to 345lbs right now. Walking around makes me puff and huff. I'm breathless doing everything. I can't take my dogs out for a walk without suffering. I don't fit in seats on the bus or subway, and yet standing hurts my feet. My knees have recently started hurting when I'm walking down stairs. My kids are almost 10 and 12, and I can't say "Hey, let's go for a bike ride!" - I would never be comfortable on a bike, and I'd not get very far before I had to rest.
Our sex life suffers, because, as everyone here knows from past experience, or currently, depending on which side of surgery you're on, when you're fat, there's no "good position". Every piece of clothing is either tight or just fits. Going to work each day requires a fight to find something wearable in the morning. Bras cut into me. Shirts don't hang right.
I'm tired all the time. The person I am on the inside does NOT match the person I am on the outside. I'm just done with ALL of this.
And that's how I know.

The race isn't given to the swift nor the strong, but it's given to the ones who endure it to the end...
I had thought about the surgery for a long time but I thought you had to pay. It was when I was being tested for my breathing at St. Joes hospital and the doctor there thought my breathing problems were due to my weight and suggested the surgery. That is when I found out you did not have to pay and he did all the paper work and sent it in. He saved my life.
My internest (for my diabetes) had mentioned it to me over the past few years but I didn't even want to hear it. Finally last fall he mentioned it again and this time I was ready. I wanted to get over the diabetes and lose weight so I would be around to enjoy my grandsons who are 2 and 1 month. Couldn't imagine not being around to watch them grow up. I really beleive that once you have a reason, everything else falls into place. I am 2 weeks post op and it is the best decision I have ever made. Good luck to you.
Obesity has been a life long struggle for me...but I'm just getting to old/tired/discouraged to fight anymore. My fortieth birthday is a year away, and darn it...I need help. I tried on my own for a long time, but I just hit a wall this year, and can't fight on my own anymore.
Would love to enter my forties with more peace of mind, and with a better sense of empowerment and control over my life.

When my daughter (39) who is getting WLS in July asked me if I will feel "left behind" once she has surgery and is healthy and able to go do things like hunt, camp, fish etc. Then my family doc told me I needed 100 lbs off or within 5 yrs I would need 2 new knees but if I got WLS he could guarantee another 20 yrs on the knees I have...that was my wake up call that this surgery can get me quality of life in my last years...I'm 64!! He sent the referral right then and there before I left the office!!
