Sleep Study Questions

Hi everyone,
I am pretty new to the board, having just started my weight loss journey about a month ago.  I am with Penn Presby, Dr. Korus in Philadelphia.  I have been moving thru the tests and have my sleep study tomorrow.  I don't think (hope!) I have sleep apnea (I rarely wake up at night, don't really wake up tired, or any of the other symptoms) but am concerned about the test.  The reason is I toss and turn a lot.  Just the way I sleep.  I treated myself to a mammoth king bed a year ago (I sleep alone LOL) and love to enjoy the entire size if it all night long!.
I am concerned about being so "tied down" so to speak with all the wires and stuff in the study.  First I can totally see me within the first few hours pulling them all out with my tossing and turning...second I am afraid I will constantly wake up.
Any insight from those of you who have taken the test.  Did anyone have similar problems?  I am going to try my best to get up early the day of the test and go for a long walk during the day to be extra tired, but worry about the tossing/turning thing.
Thanks everyone for your help!

Michele,

The more you worry about it, the worse you'll sleep.  Fairly simple.

The wires and such are actually pretty long and very thin, so they don't impede you moving all that much (other than your awareness of them).  You're not "tied down" in any literal sense.

If you wake up frequently, that will register on the monitors, but as long as you're getting a good bit of sleep, it will still tell them what they need.  The tossing and turning may actually be a pretty potent indicator of apnea, by the way - your body's way of finding a position that clears your airway.

When I started using a CPAP machine (before weight loss), my tossing and turning decreased DRAMATICALLY.  I, too, thought I had no apnea until my study... but the result was significant.

Good luck, don't worry... TAKE YOUR OWN PILLOW!!!  Ask them if you can take a benadryl before bed (you probably won't be allowed to, but if you can it might help you relax and sleep better).

My sleep study allowed me to take benadryl prior to the study.....not that it worked fabulously well because, well, I wasn't home....but it did do a little something....

They put an oxygen sensor on your finger during the test - and that is the only thing that came off on me - the tech came in and put it back on.

I didn't sleep well that night...but I did sleep enough.  He told me to try to fall asleep on my back (I am a side sleeper) because they were also studying to see if I could potentially have problems being on my back during surgery.  I am a side sleeper so that was totally difficult for me to do...and after being awake for 45 mins I ended up rolling onto my side to fall asleep as the tech finally said to me that I might as well fall asleep the way I'm used to, otherwise they wouldn't get the right info.

I toss and turn as well - not horrendously bad - and the wires stayed on.

Good luck!

thanks for the info.  I am a total sidesleeper as well.  I am not sure if I can even sleep on my back...well, we do what we have to do.

Thanks everyone for the advice.  I feel much better and I am sure it will all go OK!
