OT - What am I doing wrong?
I don't post much, but I lurk alot. This thread kinda hits home as my Dad was a dedicated teacher for 30 yrs. I remember he caught 10 kids on a trip to Washington Dc, drinking on the bus and unfortunately had to suspend them all. But, he also had class at our house everyday for those 10 kids after school so that they would not fall behind. Many Many times kids and parents called our house to talk to my dad. Granted this was before txting but never the less, he was available to his students always. Now a days, people want to blame teachers for everything, place them under scrutiny and blame them for most people not being parents let alone good parents. I applaude teachers and truly believe it is one of the few admirable professions left. With that being said also though, I understand where your principal is coming from.. In this day and age, people will sue you for anything. Imagine a male teacher txting back and forth with a 15 or 16 yr old female student?? He would be guilty before anyone even found out what they were talking about??? Watch your back as closely as he is watching his!!! Remember the road to Hell was paved with good intentions!!
I too understand where my principal was coming from - now that I have had a day to sleep on it and talked with about a million people. I do beleive he was just telling me to cover my butt. Your dad was a true hero - and I think I would have done the same thing for those students who were suspended. Last year I HAD to deliver a final demerit to a student, who was troubled, but was a wonderful young man - and as I was talking with him about the infraction that I HAD to report, I was literally in tears. His mom thanked me profusely and understood how difficult it was for me to write that demerit up.
I'm soooo glad you are that available to your students! And Brian will be texting you at some point, I have noooo doubt, lol
I really really really like the idea of the form you send out at the beginning of the school year. VERY important I would think
Thanks for doing a job that is often thankless and often looked over :) AND for being so hot damned good at it!
