A bittersweet day...

Hello PA Forum!!

So, a couple of days ago my "adopted" father in law passed away. I call him adopted because I never got the opportunity to have in laws since my husbands parents died many years before we even met. My "adopted" in laws are actually friends and former neighbors of Steven's. Their son married Steven's cousin so in a weird sort of way we are related?? Well, from the first time I met them, they treated me like family. Once Steven and I were engaged, they told me to call them mom and dad. I have gotten to know, love and appreciate them. As Steven says, they are the best proxy he has to his real parents. My FIL always called me "sweetie pie" and always was so loving with Deanna, treating her like she was one of his grandkids.
Today was the funeral and it was my first opportunity to actually grieve his passing. I cried like a baby! He sold us our house that we live in now and signed our Ketubah(marriage certificate) when we got married! So, in many ways he was my FIL!! Well, we saw people today we haven't seen in quite some time and many of them were complimenting both of us on how good we looked. BTW, Steven has lost 50 lbs since my surgery. I tell him that I am glad that my surgery worked for him!! One of my MIL sisters looks at me and says, "Why do you look familiar to me?" I respond by telling her that I am Steven's wife. She says "No! You are half of Steven's wife!!!" That made my day! So that is why I titled this post " A bittersweet day" I said goodbye to a wonderful man and hello to a wonderful new life!

Thanks for reading/listening as always, Beth

Beth,

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss!  Treasure the memories of the times you had with this wonderful "adopted" FIL - sounds like he was a true "parent of the heart."  Those memories will bring your family much joy in the future, even though they're bittersweet today.

And congratulations on all the compliments - they are well-deserved, because you DO look good!

Karen,

Thanks for your condolences. I will definitely treasure the memories of my FIL. He was a great man and loved unconditionally. The WOWs were so validating and made the day a little less painful. I cannot wait until my surgiversary in June so I can really show all of my progress to everyone. I just looked at my before picture and could not believe how much weight I have lost!! I do look like a totally different person. Kudos to Dr. P for doing my surgery and I must pat myself on the back for all of the changes I have made. I would not have been as successful if I didn't have this board and support group. You are all wonderful and I am glad to be sharing this journey with all of you....

I'm sorry for your loss and you and your family (adopted or otherwise, lol) will be in my thoughts.  Congrats on realizing you are saying hello to a beautiful new life, full of great things to come!
Instead of complaining that the rosebush has thorns, be happy that the thorn bush has roses.

So very sorry for you loss. Congratulations on being able to feel all the emotions that went with the day, both pleasant and sad, and not turning to food to sooth yourself. My thoughts and prayers are being sent out for you and your family.

You know I never thought about that! I did feel the emotions of the day and did NOT turn to food. That is a huge step for me. Thanks for the insight, thoughts and prayers! They are truly appreciated!!!
