New Here! Lapband sched 5/26
Hi! I'm new to the board. I'm being banded 5/26. I'm both nervous and excited. I've been obese since I was 6 years old. Steadily got heavier and heavier and now after having had twins last year I'm at my heaviest (outside of pregnancy) of 309. I'd love to hear from you guys - lessons learned, any moms with kids - how did you explain it to them?, I really just am looking for some advice/support . Thanks!
Hi there - welcome to the boards!!!!! Nerves and excitement are ALL part of this amazing journey you are about to embark on....hold on....Your children will be better off becuase you are taking care of YOU ..for them! I , too, am an RNYer - so can't help with the banding thing - but you will get tons of support, love andmaybe even a good joke here and there - And, yes - to all those who are going to read this - it will be ME making the GOOD jokes! :)
Hi Kelly and welcome!
Curious as to where you are in the state? We have a great lap-band support group leader at Barix (Robin Rehr) and you're more than welcome to attend our meetings. We meet first saturdays (yep, tomorrow) from 12 - 4 and third Wednesdays from 7 - 9 pm at the Barix facility in Langhorne, PA (we share a parking lot with Oxford Valley Mall). It's a great group of folks, and I know the lap-banders all looooove Robin! Completely free, of course, and on Saturday meetings we also have groups for supporters/friends/family, kids, pre-ops, and all "surgical ages" of post-ops.
Congratulations on making a choice to get healthier!
I ditto what others have said - this will be a critical part of your everyday life for the rest of your life, but your eating habits post-band should simply reflect on your kids as 'making good choices.' No need to go into lengthy explanations that they won't understand. And by you making good food choices to cook for your family and modeling good portion control day after day for yourself, they are likely to grow up with a healthy relationship with food.
Congrats and welcome!
Karen
