Hi!  I'm new to the board.  I'm being banded 5/26.  I'm both nervous and excited.  I've been obese since I was 6 years old.  Steadily got heavier and heavier and now after having had twins last year I'm at my heaviest (outside of pregnancy) of 309.  I'd love to hear from you guys - lessons learned, any moms with kids - how did you explain it to them?, I really just am looking for some advice/support .  Thanks!

Congrats on your upcoming surgery!!!

I am an RNYer but we have plenty of bandsters who will chime in.

If your kids are only a year old I wouldn't worry about it too much - congrats on twins too - how exciting!

Welcome to the PA board.  Not sure if you have checked out the lap band forum - if you go to forums, there are ones for Realize band and lap-band.  Congratulations on your upcoming surgery - you will be fine!!!

welcome aboard.. stick around and you'll find this is a wonderfully supportive group.

I agree with Liz.. if the kids are that small, just start them off with a healthy diet and tell them later if necessary.

I actually have 1 year old twins AND a 6 year old son - it's the 6 year old I'm worried about.  Any thoughts?  Thanks for the words of encouragement - it's much appreciated!

Hi Kelly and welcome!

Curious as to where you are in the state?  We have a great lap-band support group leader at Barix (Robin Rehr) and you're more than welcome to attend our meetings.  We meet first saturdays (yep, tomorrow) from 12 - 4 and third Wednesdays from 7 - 9 pm at the Barix facility in Langhorne, PA (we share a parking lot with Oxford Valley Mall).  It's a great group of folks, and I know the lap-banders all looooove Robin!   Completely free, of course, and on Saturday meetings we also have groups for supporters/friends/family, kids, pre-ops, and all "surgical ages" of post-ops.

Congratulations on making a choice to get healthier!

I ditto what others have said - this will be a critical part of your everyday life for the rest of your life, but your eating habits post-band should simply reflect on your kids as 'making good choices.'  No need to go into lengthy explanations that they won't understand.  And by you making good food choices to cook for your family and modeling good portion control day after day for yourself, they are likely to grow up with a healthy relationship with food.

Congrats and welcome!
