How do folks only have 400-600 cals a day? My protein drinks are almost that much!

I'm confused. Like that's anything new.

Anyway, I read about people eating 400-700 calories a day and I'm just not sure how the heck people keep it so low.  My shakes alone (told to have 3 per day) are 270-400 and that is if I only make them with water. That does not count making them with milk or any of the other food I am supposed to be eating during the day (told to eat 6 times per day between 1/4-1/2 cup of pretty much anything I can puree except peanut butter). Perhaps folks are not drinking 3 shakes? No milk? Not much else in the way of other foods?

I'm just figuring I'm going to have calories somewhere nearer to 700-900 range if I'm doing my 3 shakes with milk in one and that seems so much higher than other early outs that I read about.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Denise

I can't speak for the rest of the board, but I had food phobia for a LONG time.  At three months out I was only eating about 400 calories a day and would have continued if it had not been for an intervention on the part of my surgeon.  After that I consistently hit about 7-800 cals/day (including my protein shakes) and then at six months...BOOM!  900 calories.  My appetite increased as did my pouch capacity.

Nowadays I probably *could* put away 1300 calories a day but I choose not to (food phobia...I should probably aim for there with my workouts).

Remember also everyone is on different plans.  Some surgeons don't like their patients to eat snacks. Some don't like their patients to drink protein shakes at all (which mystifies me but...).

My dr. told me not to worry about the calories for the first 6 months.  The amount you will eat and drink, you cannot exceed the limit.  He told me to concentrate on my protein between 60-80g a day and my liquids, between 60-70 oz a day.  Don't worry about calories, you'll be fine.  I am 2 months out and have lost 50lbs since surgery.  I guess it works.  Take care,  Donna

I haven't counted calories YET..there is no way with the choices I am making and the amount I eat that I could be eating too much...I plan on starting soon though.
As for your ? I have wondered the same thing

Part of me has actually wondered if the people that are not sick simply can't really figure out the calories right, because yes, it is really hard to figure calories in 4 tbsp of this or 2 tbsp of that.

Thanks for your input.

My surgeon said not to worry about calories at this point.  I am getting 90-100 g of protein a day, so I know I am way over those low numbers.  I will be two months out on Wednesday and so far have lost 51# since my surgery date, so I think I am doing fine :)

Somewhere inside me, there is a fat girl just dying to get back out. I mostly just try to keep her subdued with sugar free pudding, but she's not amused.

I too, was told not to count calories, but I do anyway for my reference. My breakfast is a protein shake (with milk), 180 calories, 33 g protein. Lunch is 3 ounces of protein (ham, cheese, roast beef, chicken) and some veggie. 150 calories, 20ish grams protein. Dinner varies, meat, fish or shrimp and veggie or maybe yogurt with protein powder and Kashi Go Lean. Sometimes a protein bar and veggies. Usually around 150 calories and 15 to 25 grams of protein. An hour after dinner I have a protein shake with water 90 calories and 23 grams protein.

Totals under 600 calories, 90-100 grams of protein. I might have a sugar free pudding 1 or 2 times a week that adds another 45 calories. That is just me, I have not had my appetite come back yet and I am 17 weeks out.

I dont count calories. I do count protein and carbs.  I use Nectars mixed with water.  100 calories each +23 grams of protein for one scoop. If I get busy and have had a "low food day" I will use a scoop and a half of protein in my drinks.  I do 2-3 a day plus 3 meals.  I used to only do one protein drink a day but found when I upped the protein close to 90-100 grams the weight literally fell off. Guess my body needed more calories from protein.
