So, I am worrying about things... worrying, worrying, worrying!  i haven't even HAD MY SURGERY yet...

Has everyone experienced hair loss? How much hair did you lose? Does it get better after a while?

I know there are plenty of more important things to worry about, but this is the one I am thinking of at the moment.... !

thanks, everyone!

Almost 5 months out now. It started about 2 months ago and seems to be getting worse and not better. I started washing my hair about every other day. This week every third day (yuk...believe me I have a huge issue with that) and I dont know if that helps it or not. I am thinking I lose the same amount no matter if I wash my hair every day or not.
This morning after I washed my hair I put the conditioner in to let it set in there for a few minutes and when I did so a lot of hair came out. YIKES!
I have so much hair so for me I thought it would be no big deal. Now I am stressing over it and want it to stop!
Oh and to answer your question. My hair brush is FULL of hair and I clean it out 2 times while brushing it. This doesnt include what is loss in the shower.

I am 3.5 months out and it just started for me. Fortunately my hair is very thick so I am not panicking...yet! I am getting some Biotin today to start taking and see if it will help. Also cranking up the protein any way that I can. Even with my hair coming out, I would still have the surgery. It far outweighs my hair being thinner than it was. Eventually it will grow back--at least it has for everyone I know that has had the surgery.

Best of luck to you!

I lost well over 1/2 of my hair.  Freaked me out, I was bummed beyond belief.  My doc told me that when my weight loss stabilized, my hair loss would slow down.  I hate to say he was right, but he was.

You'll hear some say if you take biotin, get your protein in and/or use special shampoo's that will help.  But I'd beg to say, ah...not for me.  I did  all of that.  Since my 2nd week after surgery I always got in well over 80 gms of protein every day, I have always had 2 shakes per day and "regular" protein too.  I always took my b's, infact I added extra biotin a few months out and I also used Nioxin shampoo and conditioner the entire time.  None of it helped, my hair loss started 2 mo's post op and did not slow down until my 9th month.

But keep in mind, not everyone has it that bad, or at all.  And ultimately, I'd still do it all again, in a heartbeat!

Good luck,

Edie

I totally understand you, i haven't had my surgery, and when i brush my hair, it comes FULL of hair, i suffer from hypothyroidism, and is probably the cause of this, but i can not imagine how is going to be after surgery.........is there something i could start doing now ?

I'm pre-op, too, and have thought about this part of it. If losing hair is my worst side effect, I'm just gonna get a buzz cut and have fun with it!

Most people lose hair anywhere from 3-9 months after surgery.  Mine was from months 3-7.  My hair is coming back in mow.  I took biotin and used Nioxin shampoo.  Not sure if they wdid any good, but it made me feel better to try.  Would still have surgery in a heartbeat, even with the hair loss!!

Really appreciate your answers, ladies! I have thin hair, so I will probably lose a lot.  Both of my brothers are bald. Lol....

Anyway... I'll plan for the worst but hope for the best! And I'm pretty sure even if I lost all my hair, I'd rather be bald and thinner than lots of hair and fat.

Well, I will tell you this..........even if someone told me I'd go completely bald from surgery it's still the better trade off and I'd still have it done all over again.
Good luck and know that we are all in this together  :)

Yep...I started losing hair about 3 months out...I'm now a bit over 6 months and I'm losing hair like crazy.  I think I've lost a little less than 1/2 of what I started with.  I've tried bumping up my protein, taking huge amounts of biotin, Nioxin shampoo...everything everyone suggests.  NOTHING has helped.  But it's  small sacrifice when I look in the mirror and see the new, thin, healthy body I now have.  I'd do it again in a heartbeat!!!
