Hi. I am a huge pizza fan and I was wondering, will I ever get to enjoy another slice in my life? When did you finally eat a slice after RNY?

RNY on 04/12/11 with
At 2 months I didn't eat a whole slice but rather scraped the cheese adn toppings off a slice and just ate theat.  I was afraid to eat the crust/dough for fear of over doing it! Also... it was a slice with only pepperoni, mushrooms and black olives... no fresh veggies!

I am over a year out.  I gave up on pizza.  The crust feels like cement in my stomach and to just eat the toppings...well it just not do it for me!  Iprefer a salad when my family has pizza.....actually that is my usual meal an both lunch and supper...but that is just me

I don't remember when I first tried it... probably about 6 months out would be my guess (but it has been WAY too long to remember details like that!)... but I do remember just eating the toppings for probably the first year or so.  Even now (4 years next month), I still eat maybe two bites with the crust (to be able to enjoy the full "experience") and then just eating the toppings.  Even a mature pouch doesn't have much room for crust, and pizza toppings don;t generally have much protein, so you need all the toppings you can eat in order to get a decent amount of protein.  I also try to blot as much of the fat off of it as possible (amazing how much will get absorbed by a paper towel!)... which means I very RARELY eat pizza in public.

I would, however, STRONGLY encourage you NOT to think in terms of "how soon can I eat xxx?" and to take advantage of the first year post-op to really learn new. healthy eating habits because thsoe are ALL that will keep youf rom gaining weigth once the malabsorption is gone.  Also, I have never met
anyone who wished they had tried the "old" foods sooner, but have met PLENTY of people who wished they had NOT tried them as soon as they did.

Will you ever get to enjoy another slice in your life?  Probably, but no one here can really predict what you will and will not be able to tolerate.

I can't really remember when I first ate pizza.  Probably close to a year out.  But I can eat a slice or sometimes even two if they are not real big.  I eat some of the crust but not all of it.  And I always order the thin crust pizza.

Had once slice at 8 months out. It went down okay but the fat had me pebble-dashing the toilet for 3 days. Since then I make my own:

English muffin, tomato paste (I use salsa), cheese and a couple of slices of pepperoni. Finely chopped cilantro finishes it off beautifully.

Broil until cheese is browned off.

Makes two portions.

Before the surgery I kept putting things off. I was never good enough. One of the benefits of WLS is that you start to believe in yourself. Check out my blog:

When I just have to have pizza I make my own using 1/2 of a flat out for the crust and load the top with low fat protein.

I've eaten the topping off when that was about the only thing I could do when eating at a meeting where lunch was provided (right).  I've also made my own with a portabella mushroom cap as the crust, tomato sauce, seasoning and cheese.  Yum.  I also cook pepperoni in the microwave between 2 pieces of paper towel for 1 min.  makes the crunchy and bakes the oil out.  Taste like pizza and no crust.
