Switching medical coverage questions
Whether you'll need a referral to a bariatric surgeon or not will depend on your insurance policy. With my insurance, I don't need a referral to see a specialist, but with many insurance policies, you do.
You can choose to find a new surgeon to do your follow up or you can ask your PCP to take that over for you. If you're not having any problems, you probably don't need to keep seeing a surgeon. Your PCP can order your labs, but you may need to give them a list of what to order. They don't always know what labs we should get.
Please note: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. If you want medical advice, talk to your doctor. Whatever I post, there is probably some surgeon or other health care provider somewhere that disagrees with me. If you want to know what your surgeon thinks, then ask him or her. Check out my blog.
Although your PCP can handle ordering lab work for you if (s)he has a list of what to check (a good idea in any event), if you have any kind of trouble or have questions, it would be good to have a surgeon you can contact. You might be someone who has absolutely no problems and won't need to see a surgeon for follow-up, but you might not...
I would suggest calling some of the surgeons who are covered by the Anthem plan before you have surgery to explain the situation and ask them if they will take on someone *****cently had surgery with another surgeon. I know that some surgeons do not want to take on someone who is newly post-op where they might have to deal with problems that another surgeon created. It might depend on how far out you are, so let them know that when you inquire. (Your chances of some complications -- a stricture, for example -- are greater during the first couple of months.)
