8 weeks and struggling

Had a RNY 12-18, almost 8 weeks out, and really struggling with meats. I can eat most other things, but the meats are still getting stuck. Especially chicken, no matter how moist . Is this pretty normal. I throw up when it gets stuck, but really do not want this to keep happening. I am afraid to eat around anyone, in case I get sick.

There are quite a few post-ops on these boards who have had problems with chicken. A quick search may yield some good suggestions. Have you tried the thigh meat? It's inherently more moist than breast meat. ( I think it tastes better, too!! )

Sorry I don't have any other advice. I'm one of the lucky ones that had zero problems introducing solid proteins into my diet.

The only other thing I can suggest is, for now, to just concentrate on the proteins you CAN eat, even if pickings are slim, and try again the things that are not going down easily in a few weeks or a month.

Hi...It seems to me you are not ready for meat!...I think at 8 weeks I was still on soft food...try fish, eggs, thin sliced deli ham or turkey, maybe ground meet etc for a couple of weeks and then try again maybe dark chicken meat as it is a bit moister...allot of people cook in slow cookers to break the meat down....frankly I still am not a great fan of meat or chicken unless it is really moist...a juicy steak is now not a great favorite of mine anymore!..I have never had a real physical problem ( but then my surgeon was really conservative about adding foods) but I chew of a long time and by that time the food really doesn't taste very good!  I do it though because dense protein fill you up so I do what I am told!

I used to add tinned tuna to soup or chilli when I got really desperate and I was worried about my protein levels!...I now add tomato sauce or yogurt to things to moisten them as well.

Good luck...I am sure it will get better with time but dry food is really not very pleasant....and it really is discouraging!

I am 3 months out and can only eat turkey lunchmeat for my meat.  I eat peanuts greek yogurt and cheese to make up for my protein.  Unfortunately that is all I can do at this time.  Everything else makes me so sick.  And I still have to do protein shakes everyday as well

DON'T be in a hurry!  I had problems with meat (sometimes even liquids) all the way through about 3 1/2 months.  I still can't tolerate too many meats all the time.  My stomach has tried to turn me into a vegetarian.  And that's really fine...you can do that.  One thing I could do with chicken when I was still having trouble early on was to keep putting it in the grinder w/ a little bit of barbecue sauce for flavor.  Just keep trying things, and if they don't work, wait a while and try again.....try, wait, try, repeat....as long as it takes.  Don't get discouraged, but don't try to ru**** either.  Listen to your body and let it go at its own pace.

I am six and a half months post op and meat can still be hard sometimes. I bake boneless thighs with spaghetti sauce and cheese (covered) and then, cut the meat very, very fine and mix it with the sauce/cheese. I also do turkey meatballs also with sauce and cheese. Pot roast in a crock pot with gravy but also cut up very, very fine. It took me awhile to tolerate it. Tuna took me a long while also and I still can't do haddock. If I couldn't tolerate something I would wait for 3 -4 weeks and try it again and I am slowly coming along. I don't eat things around others unless I know it will be OK. When I went to a family function I brought meatballs as I knew I could tolerate them. It won't keep happening. It seems that way now but the nutritionist makes recommendations  based on AVERAGES and we are all different. Look for other sources of protein - shakes, eggs, cheese, quiche, peanut butter, yogurt. You will get there!

I was told not to eat white meat chicken until I was 3 months out. One day, my husband bought a rotisserie chicken and I ate the dark meat, warm and moist. It went down" like butta" as they say. No problems digesting or otherwise. But the next day, I said, honey, I don't want to dry out the chicken, let's eat it cold, and so we did. First I are the dark meat..fine. Then I got too full if myself and ate a nice cold piece of breast meat..about an ounce. Did I listen to my Dr.Nooooo! Did I suffer...Yyyyesss! Horribly. It wouldn't go down OR come up for about 2 hours. I was in agony. Told my Dr about" death by chicken" at the next visit. She thought I meant food poisioning. When I told her about the dry chicken she was not amused. I don't think I'll be eating white meat chicken for about 6 months.

That really does make me feel better! I am trying not to eat carbs, so I am trying to eat meat and a vegetable, but I end up with the veg, and no protein, because I cant eat it.  It just scares me so bad when it gets stuck. I have done it now 3 times this week, and it leaves my stomach sore. I tried some rib meat out of the slow cooker. It was tender and moist, but maybe too stringy? I will just stick with some lunch meat or something real thin. Thanks!

I am 26 months out and still have a hard time with chicken!  I can eat deli meat, ground beef, a few bites of steak, a few bites of chicken, chicken in soups, some seafood.  Meat is still hard for me, and I suspect it always will be.  It's frustrating, because carbs are NO PROBLEM!!!  Just eat very small bites and not too much at one time.  It's easier for me than it used to be, but I still throw up pretty easily on chicken.
