Topic: RE: Dumping?
So after gallbladder surgery, you still have to avoid fats? Is it all fats ? I eat a lot of nuts and love avocados. One of the ways I balance my blood sugar is with fats, protein and fiber. That would be difficult if I had to avoid fats. Thanks White Dove.

Topic: RE: Dumping?
Thanks Gemini,
It happened while I was eating....which was odd. I had just bought the chips but will check. I can have a reaction to sugar, (I have reactive hypoglycemia) so I am really careful with sugar. But hadn't really noticed an issue with fats before, other than the gallbladder. Won't be trying it out again, and I just had my annual checkup....but maybe calling them would be an idea. Thanks.

Topic: RE: Dumping?
So last night had some potato chips, supposedly healthier ones, just potatoes, oil and salt. During and after I got diarrhea. Is that from the oil? I had never really noticed this happening before. I am 17 years out. Do others have this? I have also had some gallbladder issues. Maybe related to that??

Topic: RE: Gastric bypass reversal
15 years out and i have it too. Had it for a few years now. I have to watch carbs and the amount I eat at one time. So I try to balance proteins/fats and carbs. Fiber can help some too. Someone just posted an article about this a couple of weeks ago that was very good. Surgery is a drastic option for the problem, if you can control it. I also got one of those bracelets with medical conditions on it.
Since many medical professionals will give you carbs for low blood sugar.....like they tell you to keep candy by your bed. DONT. sometimes nuts or nut butters can help if you feel low bs coming on. I will see if I can find that article.

Topic: RE: Iron Deficiency question......
My phosphorus is always really high....so I am pretty sure the infusions did not impact (before and after infusions).
Also, it sounds like folks post surgery are primarily followed by PCP and not by their surgeons office? I just contact the office where I had my WLS surgery done yearly and they request all the blood tests they want and then I set up an appointment to go over the results with them. My PCP may also comment on the lab results, for example on high cholestral. And i check out my results every year. My medical provider has 'mychart' and it does a graph of my results for each finding, which can be helpful and also says what the normal range is.

Topic: RE: Iron Deficiency question......
I had similiar issue around 8-10 years out (but I do think it was related to PC telling me to cut back on multi) I did end up with the 2 infusions....however that was years ago now and I track every year and it has been over 6 years and I still don't need another transfusion. I had RNY. The infusions were easy and very helpful, However very spendy on my insurance at the time. Now they would be covered. I had no problems with the influsions...totally reccomend....but would suggest you check out the cost. If I recall I paid like 1K out of pocket for each....I remember being shocked. I have iron in my mult now....but the numbers do go down every year.

Topic: RE: Oh my oh my oh my .... Iââ?¬â?¢m bringing them HOME!!!!!
oh are you fostering? best of luck to you and the girls. Must be so hard for them and for their parents whereever they are. Such a sad situation. Take care of your heart too.....love them to pieces, but also remember they could leave....fostering is a very difficult job. And if they are not even citizens they could end up ....well you know.

Topic: RE: Diet Soda
Sure if you want to undo all the work and pain you went through....start up with the diet coke. And just know you will probably never meet or maintain your goals if you are going to start slipping at 3 months in. Ouch....but true. I had a BAD diet coke addiction....my doctor made me stop prior to surgery.....yes it was soooooo hard. And for a long time....maybe a year? the sound of a pull tab would get my brain and mouth thinking about one.
Been over 13 years now....the desire went away a long time ago....but my wls friends who started back on soda....as fat or fatter than before. That is the gd truth. So you decide...it is your path and your future and diet coke will not add to the success or health of your
journey. Do you want a new healthy life? Or the same old one? Your choice....and you will live with it. All my best....

Topic: RE: Low Ferritin - 15 years post-op
Oh, the infusions did fix the problem. I haven't done my labs yet this year, so I don't know how I am doing right now, but I was fine in 2020.

Topic: RE: Low Ferritin - 15 years post-op
Me too. I had iron transfusions....they were pretty expensive. Even with insurance cost me over $1000 for one bag. I am taking a bariatric multi with iron now. I have tried the iron patches from Patch MD, I haven't used them enough to say if they work. I also tried enzymes to help digest. Best of luck to you!!

Topic: RE: Husband took me off his insurance!!!!!
Hon, you got more problems than lack of insurance and WLS will fix. Get on the ball....do what you need to do to get you and your life together. With or without the hubby. Take your venting and put that energy to use taking care of yourself and not being a victim. You can do it. If you don't, even if you get the insurance back this year....and your hubby gets on board....it will still be difficult for you and you will be eating your feelings again. WLS is a roller coaster of emotions and you need stability and persistence to be successful. You can get those without insurance. Your focus needs to be on your success and getting things worked out with your hubby not WLS....yet. Get those things and you will be better off....

Topic: RE: Feeling overwhelmed....
In the future.....in a smaller portions....after you have lost your weight and stabilize and have a new more active lifestyle. I think you need to switch your focus off of the foods you loved in the past....to the things you will be able to enjoy in the future....like walking and being in nature and bending over and guess what....you may even live a bunch longer and will develop new foods that you love. There is no food that is equal to the other stuff for me. Now in regards to alcohol.....maybe a few sips. It hits your body differently than before, I feel it with a sip or too. So , be careful because it impacts your body more. Had a friend who switched to sex and alcohol after instead of food and she died in her 40s.....I couldn't believe it. So start thinking about what you will gain and not what you may have exchanged for your health. If you really do watch it....you will find changes... I started eating and loving things I never liked before. Still can have some nachos or a small slice of pizza....if I chew it well. But you can choose a bunch of carbs or your possible life of being slimmer. Time to get your head in the game! best of luck! It is worth it!

Topic: RE: Magnesium Deficiency
Monica,
are you sure it is related to magnesium and not something else? I have had pains on and off and I think it is related to osteoporosis. Anyway, for magnesium issues and leg cramps- first off when you are in pain, I get the leg cramps pills -from Hylands. They are fantastic. The other thing that will work in a pinch is mustard. Yep, the yellow stuff. Swallow a tablespoon. I have had it work and I started taking mustard packets from fast food places while mine was bad! Then if it is for sure a deficiency, I make and use 'mag oil'. it is very important that you used good quality flakes and distilled water. Just 2 ingredients. Anyway, after you make it you put it in a spray bottle and if I think I need some help sleeping or whatever I will spray (must always shake it) on my thighs. It can tingle. I get regular blood tests and I know this will raise your level. Google 'mag oil' for a recipe. You can buy the flakes on amazon too. I am 11 years out this week! Oh my the time goes quickly! Best of luck to you I know the cramps can be such a pain! But it hurt enough I did swallow the mustard (I was in too much pain to drive) and it did work. Take care!

Topic: RE: Reversing RNY: Best Surgeons??
So sorry you are having this problem. Don't know anything about a surgeon but I have had reactive hypoglycemia too. I think your stats are very low, I think more people get it. Mine started when I was 9 years out and I have to be careful of what I eat. I have been able to mostly control mine and it seems to come in spurts not all the time. Best of luck with the redo and please post and let us know how it works out. Take care.

Topic: RE: 10 year anniversary
I forgot to mention supplements. They are very important and needed life long. I still take calcium and a good multi. Have had some iron issues that came up (after a doctor told me to cut back on multi). I have never had a vitamin D issues or B12. I take Vita Lady D, and I only need it every so often. My D is constantly over 60 and I live in a place where most regular folks have low D. I take sublingual B12, not as often now since I always topped out over 1400 so they told me to take it less frequently. I still need to focus on iron and zinc and they are not easy ones to take ;(
Please get blood work every year or more often if needed so you don't get into major problems and see a bariatric doctor at least once a year. Regular docs have caused me issues by saying things like don't take so many vitamins. Some vits or minerals if you get too low can cause permanent issues for you....like brain damage.

Topic: RE: 10 year anniversary
I can't believe the 10 years has gone by so quickly! Still doing well. Pretty much can eat what I want most of the time and I prefer to eat healthy. Would like to be more physically active and that helps with my weight and strength....keep up the exercising and make it fun. Have had an issue with Reactive Hypoglycemia which is a major pain at times. But again means watching what I eat and it helps to be more active. I have no regrets that I got an RNY....well maybe I wish I would have done it sooner is all.....take care everyone out there....use your tool on your journey!
PS. Yikes almost forgot to talk about weight, my weight is higher than I like right now around 144. I seem to be best around 138. Lowest was 117 which was way too low! Again, if I work out more it is better. I eat healthy and not much processed foods. For protein I have eggs, some dairy, chicken and fish but I mostly do not eat much meat at all. Eat a lot of seeds, nuts....fruit and vegies...also make my own herbal tea to drink. And don't take protein supplements or use any low calorie sweetener crap because I don't believe those are good for you. I had several friends who had RNY, one died at 42 from alcohol abuse, and several regained because they just kept eating fast food and soda pop. So, if you are going to go to all the trouble to get the surgery....well then use it! Watch what you eat and move that new body! Don't abuse it. And even though they say it is not brain surgery....well I can tell you that I seldom get cravings unless my blood sugar is low (that is a symptom for me) and I love other foods that I never even thought of before....like kale, sweet potatoes (no not with marshmallows).

Topic: RE: Does Costco make you fat??
sounds like you are on a slippery slope to me....no reason to ever have pop or soda....it is not Costco, it is what YOU put in your mouth. There are some healthy options there....check them out

Topic: RE: Family Non-support Rant
I have seen this sort of thing before and I do think that to them we do look like POWs at times. I just went back and looked at some of my earlier weight loss photos and I had no butt!!! I got way low before I bounced back to something more normal and manageable for me. And I also remember Lots of hanging skin .....I hope other folks don't have this....but I sure did. I lost over 100 in like six months....I did not appreciate the comments but if someone close to me did that I would probably say something I shouldn't!! Like you look too skinny!! I did!

Topic: RE: Family Non-support Rant
Well how about " some things are genetic and only surgery will fix!" So sorry this happened to you but there is a lot of talking about your body when you are going through surgery and the after effects. Things that can help, 1) not talking to them about your body or weight loss (talk to supportive people instead) and 2) you can just give them a weird look and say 'why would you ever say that?!?!..You will get through this transition much easier if you realize what people say is really not about you, it is about them. So my guess is your mom may have some issues with her chin? Just a guess. But it took me a long time (I am 10 years out this month) to just realize that most people, especially women, have weight issues and when they see you changing it triggers their own issues around weight, body image or appearance. Best of luck...but while you are going through this time of change...and losing weight....growing a thicker skin will help you too!

Topic: RE: What's the deal with fruit?
Ok, I am really far out...nine years. I love and eat most fruits and vegies. Only issue with fresh fruits is the skins for me. I must eat slow and chew it well. If I eat too fast or don't chew it can be bad. My first time throwing up was after eating a nectarine...with skin. Oh, I had RNY.
I feel like I am doing pretty good post surgery. I think as long as you watch the amount of fruit you eat you will be okay. I can't think of any fruit I don't eat....been eating a lot of seedless watermelon this summer and blueberries. Fruit is good for you and the more things (normal) that you can eat, the more comfortable you will feel eating in front of other people.
Early on no added sugar applesauce was good. That is all I remember from 9-10 years ago. I feel I am generally 'normal' in what I eat, just don't eat as many processed things and carbs as other people. Best of luck to you!

Topic: RE: Vegetarian after RNY?
I was telling someone the other day about when I was less then a year out and I was traveling with my mom and I just hadn't gotten enough meat (protein) during the trip...and my mom was starting to look pretty good (food wise). I am open to listening to my body and watching my health and trying to eat in a way that is healthy for me and my body. Which I think will mean, ignoring labels. I am thinking of going pretty healthy and vegie and having dairy, fish and poultry when it feels needed. I did some whey protein bars for awhile and they helped. Sounds like your family is all doing great!

Topic: RE: Vegetarian after RNY?
After my RNY I became more carniverous than I had ever been! I think my body was craving protein or something. Then when I was working out alot, I really craved nuts and still have alot of nuts in my daily diet. I am currently exploring more of a vegetarian and even raw or vegan eating pattern, and at this point I think maybe I could do it, but would like more studies on WLS and being vegan. I think I may always use a whey protein source, but am cutting down on animal products. Hope your surgery and all was very successful!

Topic: RE: Labs back, Toxic on Vitamin D?!?!
VitaLady,
It was my local hospital lab. I finally got the lab results. It looks like 30-100 ng/ml, and it says 25 OH Vitamin D.
It just shows mine as >100.0, and it is flagged as H for high. Does that answer your questions? It would have been helpful if they did say how much it was. It does say they did the test 2 times.
Other scores that were flagged
TP- 6.3 L
Globulin 1.9 L
A/G Ratio 2.3 H
WBC 3.8 L
B12- > 1600 H
Thank you, obviously the Vit D I get from you works since I was 43 last time!
