Will being a Diabetic stop me from getting approved?

I am wondering if being a diabetic will keep me from getting approved for WLS.   My husband seems to think it might.  I take insulin plus Metformin and Glipizide pills. I would love to hear from other diabetics on this and what to expect if I do get approved.

Lynn; Diabetes is considered a co-morbidity and if anything will help you get approved. Most diabetes is cured through WLS. Good luck on obtaining your approval and keep us posted on your progress!

I agree, it should help you get approved.  Good luck in your process.

Yep, what Jennifer and Stephanie said!!!  At the OH Conference yesterday, Dr. Davis said that there are SOME doctors who even support RNY for diabetic patients who are NOT obese because of the high cure rate of diabetes after WLS.

LYNN-Diabetes was the MAIN co-morbidity that got me APPROVED. It took me about 6 months post to come totally off insulin (I'm 5 yrs out now), and, while I'll never be "cured" of being Diabetic, I truly believe I can be "managed"-my labs have been great. Best of luck to you!

I'm with the others, I'm diabetic, but my weight alone wasn't enough to qualify me, I was only 100 lbs overweight, but the diabetes pushed me over the top! Thank goodness! I'm only 3months out, was taking 1000mg glucophage, 6mg glynase, 45mg Actos as well as several vitamins, Altace for kidney protection, and my a1c was doing good to stay at 7.5, but now, I'm taking only the Actos, will be off of that soon, and my a1c was 6 on June 5th! My internist is so thrilled with my results, she uses my case to encourage other diabetic patients to consider wls!
